Garmin Edge 800 froze mid-ride.

I'm just bummed and want to complain. Mid ride, last night, my Edge 800 froze. It was dark, so I didn't know exactly when it did. Couldn't see the screen and as I was on a descent, I was watching the road and not the 800. Only about five minutes later, at the bottom of the hill when I made a turn and went into TT mode, did I try to wake up the screen by tapping it so that it would turn on the back-light and I could read what my current speed was. Nothing. I stopped and tried to play with the buttons. Nothing worked. Screen was frozen with the last data recorded. Based on that last recorded data, it looks like it froze about 100 meters into the start of the one-mile descent. No idea what caused the freeze. I did go over a few asphalt expansion cracks/bumps, but nothing unusual.

Finished the ride and at home I tried to remove the micro-SD card, play with the buttons again, and hook it up with a USB cable to the computer. Nothing. So, I went to the Garmin web site to see if my registered unit was still under warranty. It is, but I started browsing around the self-help section and they give the instructions on how to do a hard reset. I started the procedure, the first step of which is to hold the power key down, then press some other buttons. Well, holding the power key down for more than a moment caused the unit to do something. I did not proceed with the hard reset.

The ride data is in the memory, but only up until it froze. Unit seems to be working fine now. The self-help website also said that a common fix to freezing screens is to do a firmware update. Huh? Okay, I'll go ahead and update it. But, from now on, I'm going to carry my old 500 in the back pocket so that I'll have a backup to recorded ride data.

I'm not asking for help or anything. I just want to vent. These things are expensive and they should not freeze up like this.

The number one cause of that is people keeping a lot of ride history data on the unit. Once you upload to Garmin Connect, Strava, etc. or pull off the .TCX files onto your computer, delete them from your history folder. Odds are, that will solve your problem.

The other day I was considering what would happen if my Android or Garmin froze in the middle of a ride in unfamiliar territory. Yeah, you can reboot and maybe that will get you back on track but a good idea to carry a cue sheet or have a back up. Just like with any electronic device you have to consider the possibilities if something fails. Having a back-up plan is a good idea.

Not that many rides on the unit. Just about 15 or so. I periodically back them up to my winchester and a thumb drive, and then delete with the Linux file manager utility. The freeze was just one of those things. Had to go to a Windoze machine to run the Garmin web updater, and since upgrading the firmware, no issues, (and the same data is still on the internal memory card).
