I have both an iPad and a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 (Windows). The thinkpad is smaller and has a more travel-friendly shape in my opinion. In addition, it runs full Windows which means I have all my desktop applications available.

For productivity/work purposes, the thinkpad is better. If I was going on a tour where I wanted to get my work done remotely, I'd pick the thinkpad.
For general web browsing, playing videos, etc...basically entertainment purposes, the iPad is better. If I was touring and just wanted something to watch Netflix or browse the web, I'd pick the iPad (or an android tablet, probably the Nexus 7).

If you are using public wifi a lot, as with any portable device with wifi, consider a VPN service for security. I use Witopia and think ti works well.

It would depend on the content. I have found the opposite to be true. I have to create/edit complex Word docs, generate intricate powerpoint preso's, and even more intricate Visio diagrams. iPads are TERRIBLE for that stuff. And remote desktop (xenApp or VM product) doesn't help at all for those needs. Sorry, but I consider it to be purely a consumption device. Specialized apps can enable it for less technical things like sales orders, or using forms for selecting from existing content, but calling it a creation device is nowhere near accurate in my experience using them (and I manage a lab which develops demos for iPads and other mobile devices).
