GPS with total voice input and output?
Got a new Nexus 7 tablet and playing with the navigation capabilities using Google Maps and OsmAnd off-road free. Nifty little programs, but I became reacquainted why I gave up a touch screen phone- I have difficulty seeing the screen outside during the daytime.
I know I can set them up to use audible turn by turn navigation, but does anyone know of anything that also allows for voice commands? Basically, what I'm wanting is to be able to speak the destination and then listen to the TTS complete with announcing upcoming intersections/street names regardless of any direction change. |
If you're just navigating and can use the apps for the Android platform, the "Google Navigation" app gives and takes voice commands ( although you do have to press some of the screen buttons before issuing any voice commands. Once you get to the "voice" command you just tell it the address and if it understands you the first time it then starts giving you voice prompts to your destination. Works very well for getting from point A to point B as long as you aren't too concerned if it routes you down a major highway. Been my experience though that it is best to use an app that allows you to use a route that you have mapped out ahead of time ( so you can avoid roads that aren't suitable for bikes ). The G-Nav app doesn't do that although I do believe it can be set for cycle use.

The Google map/navigation app has a bicycle (and pedestrian) mode that should keep you off highways.

I was hoping to avoid 3G/4G data usage, but I'm thinking that may not be possible with what I'm wanting to do. The OsmAnd app on my tablet relies completely on GPS, but I found that it isn't the most up to date with regard to local businesses. For example, when searching for 'food shops', it tells me about a store that is 1.5 miles away- completely ignoring the one that is 3 blocks away.
