Cateye micro wireless adding miles while stopped ?
 

I use the Cateye micro wireless bike computer to keep track of my mileage and progress . After my last ride i took it off the bike and noted the odometer mileage at 384 even . I put it in my office drawer and this morning i went for a bike ride and when i went to slip it back on the bike it read 385.6 miles .

Any idea why it would change my mileage when its not even on the bike . BTW i don't open that drawer very much . lol Does this happe to others and if so how do you prevent it ? Thanks .

is there something nearby that might be emitting EMF?
That would be my guess..... a laptop? Ham Radio? Cell phone?

Or maybe your brain wants to ride so badly that YOU emit the EMF? ;)

Lose the wireless and get a wired one. I've had 2 wireless ones and they were constantly picking up stray energy. Every time I would ride by a local power substation they would freak out. When I would bring the unit in the house, it would go to 99+ mph when I set it near my laptop.

Or use a cloth tape measure. It's not subject to EMF interference.

is leaving it on the bike not an option? otherwise, after a year you'll have about 1000 extra miles logged. no one needs to know.

Today went for my bike ride and decided to try leaving the Cateye on the bike in the garage . The only reason i take it off is because it's colder and damp in the garage and hard on batteries . i"ll see tomorrow if my mileage stayed the same with the computer left on the bike . Had a great ride this am . Going a little further each day . Some day this is going to feel great .

any day you ride should feel great. any day you go farther and/or faster you should feel really great. keep up the good work.

Interesting. I was going to post up a similar question. Im removing the tire and putting the computer in the truck with me. Will driving cross country add miles to the computers odometer? and if so, if I remove the battery will I loose tracked odo reading.

Leaving the Cateye on the bike for a few days now and mileage stayed the same . It also stayed the same because the weather has been so lousy here in NB Canada . Summer is going to be short this year .

This used to happen to me occassionally. It took me a couple of years to figure it out becaue it was so intermittent and there did not seem ot be any raeason for it. Then one day I was sitting at a light and my odo said I was doing about 20mph. Since there was no danger from traffic I sat there till I figured it out. What happened is the magnet on the spoke stopped right at the sensor.

Normally even that doesn't cause it to say you're moving -- but if you were rocking back and forth slightly it could.

However, if you park your bike like that, with the magnet right on the sensor ... that can lead to a dead transmitter battery by the next day, depending on the model.

If you want troublefree operation, it seems that there's two routes to take for your cyclocomputer -- 1) get a wired one -- even the cheap ones work great, or 2) get a high end wireless one. The lower end wireless ones tend to have issues, it would seem. And sometimes even the high end ones have issues.

GPS based units work pretty well too, but they have their own issues.

Are you using an unsecure locking system? Try a $4 Master Lock.
