Garmin Edge 1000

I recently sold my Edge 810 and picked up the Edge 1000.. I was leery about the 1000 because Garmin devices always have software issues right out of the gate that take months to resolve..

I had planned on using my Edge 200 while researching options for a new computer but it died a horrible death.. My LBS had an Edge 1000 in stock so I decided to go get it.. Mainly because I have Di2 and I was intrigued by the Shimano D-Fly integration. Segments along with text and phone notifications also looked pretty cool..

I've only used the Edge 1000 one time (today) and it was on a 36-mile ride.. I have it paired up to an iPhone 5S but also have a Nexus 5 that I can test it with...

The Edge 1000 is much bigger than the Edge 810 and it makes the Edge 200 look like a tiny little toy... The screen on the Edge 1000 is very, very nice! GPS locks in lightning fast and the unit boots up much faster than my Edge 810 did..

I won’t get into a lengthy review of the Edge 1000 as dcrainmaker already has a ton of info on his site. Linky → First look at the new Garmin Edge 1000 | DC Rainmaker

Right out of the box there is a firmware update (2.20) for the Edge 1000. I installed it but have no idea what it is suppose to fix.. I paired it up to my iPhone 5S and off I went…

I made a few segments via Garmin connect before I headed out and loaded them onto the device..

Initial issues (before the ride)
1) No more bike profiles!
2) No way to enter total miles

Issues while riding
1) A few times during the ride I got a ‘locked screen’ message. Yes the screen was locked and would not respond to any input.. Pressing and holding the power button did bring up a menu with the option to unlock it.. This is a massive bug! I don’t really want to do this several times during my ride.
2) Bluetooth drops and reconnects randomly.

The good stuff
1) The segments I loaded worked great! As I came to the segment the Edge 1000 alerted me and kept me updated with my progress on the segment. Awesome stuff!
2) I got 3 text messages and was alerted to them all. I did not get any phone calls. Awesome! (text and phone notifications only work with iOS = no Android)
3) The ride was automatically uploaded via Garmin Connect after my ride was complete. (was always an issue on my 810)
4) The included maps appear to be on par with the maps that were included in my 810 bundle. I didn't play with maps much but I did view them a few times during my ride.
5) Weather worked fine (was always an issue on my 810)

I did not pick up the Edge 1000 bundle version because my LBS only had the non bundle version in stock. I ordered the wireless cadence and speed sensors today but probably won’t have them for a few weeks. I also ordered the Shimano D-Fly sensor for my Di2 but that is currently on back-order until the end of July..

Overall I’d say the Edge 1000 is not quite as buggy as my 810 was (although firmware 3,0 on the Edge 810 did fix most of my issues) and it has some pretty killer features over the 810.

There are a few major bugs however and knowing Garmin it’s going to take a while for them to sort it out.. The 2 major bugs right now are the locked screen issue and the Bluetooth dropping and reconnecting.. It’s also a bummer that is is no way to add total mileage and that bike profiles are gone..

Segments along with the text and phone call notifications are the absolute killer features of the Edge 1000.. It boots faster and it locks onto GPS faster. The screen is also much better..

This was my 1st and only ride with it so more to come later.. There are several features that I did not try like the live feed, the virtual partner and mapping directions along a few others..

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them..

Went 47 miles today and found more interesting things out during my ride..

When you get a text, you get the pop over notification.. I thought that was it but no there is more.. Swipe down on the screen and select the missed text. Then on the next screen select the text you want to view and walla, there is the actual content of the text message for your reading pleasure! Awesome! Now I can read and decide if I want to stop, dismount, dig phone out and respond or not..

Today I had 11 text messages and I read them all while pedaling.. Not a single one was important enough to stop my ride..

Segments worked awesome again today!

I did not get any of the 'locked screen' bugs that I had yesterday.. Last night I did do a factory reset and that appears to have solved it, for now at least..

Bluetooth is still a bit of a pain.. Once I am connected and synced everything worked great. The issue I am having is that Garmin Connects displays 'failed sync' in red when I 1st open the app.. If I reboot the Edge then connect, it syncs up and no further issues.

Again, I didn't really play with maps other than when they popped up for the segments.. Virtual partner worked great and ride auto uploaded at completion with no problems.. Weather was spot on again..

Battery drain is about 15% per hour so far.. I assume this will get better over time as the battery break in / conditions and might also improve with Garmin firmware tweaks..

So far, I am happy with it.. Garmin does need to tweak Bluetooth and bit though..

hey keep it up.. I'm reading. Bummer that you have to load segments... Garmin should integrate with strava and call it done...
I to have an 810 that I plan to kick down to the wife and upgrade to the 1000.

No bike profiles ? that is kind of a bummer, no ?

Ya and depending on where you live, there might not be any segments available.. Not a real issue though as I made several of my own that cover the routes that I take. For my area, there were already several segments made and available.. I did use / send to device 3 of the ones that were already made then created several of my own..

Yes Bike Profiles are gone! Not really a huge issue as the Edge 1000 is suppose to pair everything from all your bikes then automatically connect to the ones that are specific for the bike you are riding.. The bigger issues, for some at least, is that you can't add total milage (odometer) at all anymore never mind for each specific bike..

I have not tested this with different bikes and/or numerous sensors so I honestly have no clue if it will present any issues..

That no profiles thing seems stupid to me. Oh and the odometer thing? I wonder if there's a way to input that online or something.

Ya I agree.. It really made no sense for Garmin to do away with them..

All rides are uploaded to Garmin Connect so I can view total mileage there BUT it's not bike specific and just gives a total #..

Here are a few photos of the unit on my 2013 Specialized Sirrus Limited SL4..

Out front mount.. It's not long enough and puts the computer over the bar / stem. I have ordered a K-Edge XL that solves this issue but it's kind of a bummer that the included one is not long enough..

Showing the Edge Remote that I purchased separately. Mounted using the included MTB mount. I really like the remote and it's pure awesomeness! Highly recommend it to anyone getting the Edge 1000..

Lastly, the Edge Remote showing it's relation to my Di2 shifters

The total odometer/bike odometer and lack of bike profiles is a real bummer to me as I like the separation. On my 810 I have 4 bike profiles setup, single road bike, my mountain bike, our tandem and one setup for when I use it on walks with wristband. Each one has a differing set of data fields that I use. I really hope they get convinced to put the bike profiles back.

It really made no sense for them to eliminate the bike profiles..

Contact Garmin and voice your opinion.. I contacted Garmin support and let them know that I want bike profiles back. The person I spoke with said she had several calls requesting the same..

Today I went on a 47 miles ride. No issues whatsoever and the Edge 1000 worked and performed great! I demolished one of my segments by 1 1/2 minuets (1:37 to be exact) on a 2 mile climb.. Guess I had been slacking off before.. Segments really are pretty awesome and they push you, which for me a least is great!

I did not get the 'locked screen' that I had on day one so I assume it's been resolved! I had no Bluetooth disconnects, the ride uploaded just fine after It ended and weather worked fine..

I've only done 3 rides with it, but I really do like it over the 810..

I am not sure who the moron at Garmin is that tested and approved the new 'longer' out front mount but he needs to be retrained! As you can see in the photos I posted it's not long enough.. Garmin really should have spent the extra 2 cents in plastics cost and extended the mount out further..

My OCD loves the Edge Remote = no more smudges / fingerprints on the screen

Does it work like a full time GPS? Can you type in a friend's address when you're lost in the middle of nowhere?

The 800 does that. There's no reason to expect that the 1000 doesn't.

Thanks for the review, I have an 810 and my wife just got a 510. I can't believe the 1000 doesn't have bike profiles. I use my garmin on several different bikes and it's so convenient to have that feature.

Text messages while riding is one of those what is this world coming to moments for me as I'm sure navigation was to some when that first came out on bike computers. I'll wait until Garmin can stream my netflix.

I see it as a nice feature.. Today for instance I had 7 text messages and the only one I read came from my son.. I read that one to check and see if it was anything important...

No doubt it's a nice feature, I'm just saying I like to ride to disconnect from it all for a while. The thought of having a ride interrupted by any text that is less than some emergency is chilling. Yet even more annoying is having to stop during a ride to check your phone so I can see how this would be better in that regard.

No kidding. Did you all miss the place where I said, "No doubt it's a nice feature". I was simply making a larger observation that technology is finding new ways to intrude on us. Granted you can disable it. A few of you take things way too seriously and get defensive. If people want to read text messages rather than enjoying a ride that's their preference. I just want to watch netflix so I'll wait until that feature comes out.

I wish there was a way to select who I want to get notifications from..

I add the contacts (maybe via Garmin Connect) that I want to receive notifications from and the rest go into never, never land kinda thing..

Probably to complex since it uses the iPhones notification center to work..

That's probably going to be a feature on the Garmin Edge 1100.. Comes with a 7" screen and a way, way, way out front mount..

Because I feel it's just another thing we don't really need that intrudes on being in the moment and I felt like commenting on it. Checking text messages while riding a bicycle seems about as great as doing it while driving. Worse, isn't the point of cycling to enjoy the ride? That was my point.

I also acknowledged it would still be better than having to stop your ride to check your phone. So I'm not dismissing this feature either. Have I justified myself sufficiently to you now that I am allowed to express an opinion?

I forget where the thread was here but not too long ago, some yahoo actually was asking about the best way to mount their iPad on their bike.
