Niterider Flamethrower HID conversion
I bought a niterider flamethrower a bunch of years back and used it but after a while the ballast went out. Turns out the ballasts are no longer available so I essentially have a $450 paper weight.
Found a used Flamethrower with a good ballast but started thinking. Has anyone ever converted an existing HID or other niterider light to LED and made it BETTER??? I'd love to keep the clean look of the niterider but make it a little more modern and brighter. Thanks! |
I don't think you could just replace the internals of the headlamp with an LED (perhaps someone smarter than me could), so I don't know if you'll be able to keep the clean look of the niterider, but you could definitely replace the head unit with Trail Tech || 35mm LEDs if the niterider uses a 10.8 volt system.
If it uses a 14.4 volt system, you'd just have to add in a 12v voltage regulator like Component - Switch: switch with 13.2V regulator & LED Indicator for HID Bike-lighting (1' long) I'm in the same boat as I know eventually my HID light will go, and I don't want to throw away my investment in batteries and chargers. Of course if anyone knows how to replace the head unit guts while keeping the actual head unit, I'd love to hear other suggestions. |
I've found Niterider has good post sales Customer service. when you asked, what was their suggestion?

I was in the same situation. It's probably not practical trying to replace the HID lamp with an LED. LEDs are best supplied using a switching current regulator, need very good heat sinking so as not lose intensity from getting hot, and have much different reflector/optics requirements. I just got an 700 lumen self contained LED light for $120 and tossed the Niterider. Actually I got two; for 1400 lumens when needed, can put one on the bars and one on the helmet, etc....
