JR, what if you used friction tape (also known as hockey tape). A wrap or two around the bar might keep it from slipping. After the first few days the tape will lose its tackiness and won't bleed any black. It is designed to stick to itself, so it makes a very clean shim. Here is an Amazon link, but note that this is a common item available at all home improvement stores.

Got a whole bunch of FLY6ce mounts, SWAT, ICS, Trek Madone 9, GoPro, etc. Here is the last one I am working on,
Attachment 598566 It is different than the one that comes with the Cycliq devices, but I also have a clone of the original mount too. |

Just modeled this GoPro mount (the blue part) onto the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt Aero Mount.
Curious to see how it turns out. Awaiting part from Shapeways. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/790/4...1ec7a593_b.jpg |

Really good looking model, keep up the work. We need more people designing these small parts since manufacturers seem unwilling. |

Here is a model made by request.
Wahoo Fitness mount for a 3T Integra Stem. It replaces the Garmin plastic insert with one that works for the Wahoo Fitness devices. Attachment 604169 Wahoo 3T Integra Stem Insert |

I was just going to epoxy a GoPro mount to my Bolt mount before I came across this thread. I'll share some pics when it's all finished. |

Thank you. Your models are pretty great looking as well!
Also, thank you for the tip on the Wahoo shared repository. I was just going to epoxy a GoPro mount to my Bolt mount before I came across this thread. I'll share some pics when it's all finished. I love the idea that Wahoo was willing to share the mount design. It helps them fill a niche that they themselves can't fill. I still don't post anything about the stuff I have designed on the Garmin forums. The people there are real pains you know where, when it comes to anyone showing any interest in a non-Garmin provided mount. Others have listed my stuff there, but not me. Cycliq is also anal about their mounts. Fizik, Topeak, Prologo, Specialized all have dropped the ball lining up people to take advantage of their integrated mounts. We really need more people like those at Wahoo Fitness. I would love to speak to Wahoo Fitness directly just to let them know how much I appreciate their support. |
Hi. Last year I bought your Varia to Specialized SWAT mount and it worked out great. Any thoughts about a dual Fly6CE and Varia Radar to Specialized SWAT mount?

Some times you can do then inline up and down, but that would make a very long SWAT mount. |
If anyone has been reluctant to buy a 3D printed mount from Shapeways maybe this will incent you to do some 3D modeling try. Use this referral code and get 15% off your first order of any design you make. Conditions listed here.
FU1V2 I usually don't get codes emailed to me at all, this is the first I have seen in a very long time. I wished Shapeways would do this more often. |

Has anyone designed, or know of an existing "universal" stem mount that can handle 2 accessories? I'm thinking something along the lines of the Blendr mount, but without having to swap the stem out for a Blendr stem. The attached pics hopefully will make what I'm looking for clearer. If such mount does not exist, it's probably a good candidate for 3D printing. The idea is to be able to mount any device by using the proper adapter for it. If it's a Gopro, a Smart phone, a light, a computer, etc., you just use the proper mount for the device.
The 2 arms in the 1st picture attach to the stem screws. In the 2nd picture, the mount that is shown is specific to a computer, and would actually be substituted permanently for a mount similar to the one shown in the 3rd picture and would serve as the basis for the dual "universal" mount, to which you can attach up to 2 device specific bases. The 4th picture is just an example of the possibilities. FYI, the 3rd picture is actually part of the Blendr system, and is not intended to be integrated wholly in the design, just the 2 mounting holes. You can also ignore the color spacers in the 2nd picture, as they are not relevant to the idea. I hope I made myself clear, and am not just rambling on! |
The Chinese are already doing things like this, although not the same exact implementation. It is a nice concept if not a bit spendy, by my calculations $60 for the mount, another $15 for the GoPro section, if you want something other than all black it adds another $5. Compare the K-Edge combo mounts at $65 - $70 dependijng on size. Individuals like myself and other 3D model designers here that use a printing service (ponoko, shapeways, imaterialize, etc) generally do not have the ability to add hardware to the designs without diverting all orders to their own location to include it. The metal spacers used on the stem bolts are a critical part, that typically cannot be done by the print service.
I love the concept, might even consider buying one for myself if it were cheaper. |
You are right, this is an expensive solution, but IMO so elegant, and for me at least, in a perfect position on the bike, better than the other solution out there that mount the device to the stem itself. The device sits a few more inches forward, reducing the amount of head tilt down required to look at the screen, and positioning it better ergonomically.
That solution already exists at www.f3cycling.com and started out as a Kickstarter project, which is where I got the idea from. It is very expensive though, $60 for the base mount, $15 for the gopro adapter, $40 for the phone adapter (ouch!). I personally would be willing to purchase the base, if someone on here were to come up with various adapters for our devices, adapters we can 3D print. Would that be cheaper overall? If there was enough interest on the board, we can potentially do a group buy. What do you think? |
I am not sure it would actually be any cheaper that way. The only advantage might be getting some obscure computer mount they don't offer, or a mount for the light/camera that might fit a Varia headlight or some Bontragers that don't use a GoPro style mount. I already knew it was from F3Cycling, didn't know it was a kickstarter. I generally stay away from Kickstarter and Indiegogo and other crowdfunding sites.

Waldo,
At this point, I would just be happy if there is an adapter that I can stick on the back of my phone and mount to the F3Cycling stem base. It would have to be a Wahoo compatible "disk" (the male mating part if you will). Have you modeled anything like that, and if so, have any for sale? I assume it would be cheaper than the $40 option that F3Cycling is offering. Please let me know. |

I have never modeled the Wahoo male mounting section. I could, send me a PM and tell me exactly what you need and I may be able to come up with something for you. |
Just received my part from Shapeways.
The fit is pretty much perfect but the material is a bit on the flimsy side. Not sure it's going to hold my light without a little epoxy. @Silver Steve,
If you are buying your own designs, use the HP Multi Jet Fusion Printer. It is listed as HP Nylon at the bottom of the model upload page. Attachment 605215 It is about the same price as Premium Black or White, but it is stronger and has an eggshell finish. I think I had to tweak a few thicknesses on the Wahoo mount so that Shapeways didn't automatically reject the model for wall thickness. Unfortunately, this is still a Makers Only material, but as soon as it goes public I will disable the Premium Black and White and replace it with the Gray and Black HP Nylon parts in my listings. Also a suggestion on that model, make your GoPro section a bit shorter, space permitting. |
@WheresWaldo
Thanks for the tip on the HP material and the model tweak suggestion.
This is my first go around with printing plastic from Shapeways. I have a lot to learn. Unfortunately it's quite expensive once you include the price of shipping. Not sure if I'll make a version 2.0 or try and epoxy the piece I made into the Wahoo mount at this point.

This is all about offering choices that manufacturers either didn't think about or don't care about. For instance I have a Specialized SWAT mount that is a Fizik ICS adapter. You know those two groups don't want interchangabilty they want to lock you in to 'their' stuff. Neither Specialized nor Fizik would ever build such an item. But if you need/want one then you will pay the price for it instead of trying to kludge something together. Your other options are always tape and glue, they can be your friend if you want to attach thing A to thing B when things A & B come from different people. 3D printing, in my mind, is for those single items you can't get anywhere else. With the exception of one single item on my Shapeways page I can easily count how many of some items I have sold (note some are 0 items). I can also easily count how many items I have on my bike, that wouldn't be there is I couldn't 3D print them.

So check this out, it came out better than I had even hoped. The 3T Integra stem with a Wahoo Bolt, looks like a match made in heaven.
