Bike Horns

I found out that my parents' had a bike horn put on my (road)racing bike that I use to get everywhere. I have already found that it is causing pain in my hips from how wide it is.

Also, Has anyone experienced a bike horn becoming stuck in the 'on' position? While mine hasn't done that. I will rarely use it, if at all. Because, It is extremely loud. It startled me the first time I tried it, not in traffic and from a standing position. I would think that it may startle some motorists'.

What exactly is causing pain in the hips? The horn? The bike? My road bike is pretty narrow, although I did make a fat tire bike that feels too wide. If you use cleats, there is some lateral adjustment in the cleat placement on your shoes.

Personally I rarely use my car horn, and don't feel I need a bike horn. I do like to notify people when I pass, which I use a simple "Hello" for, although a bell would be good too.

I think zound makes refillable bike air horns.

I remember reading in some states a bell is required, horns were not allowed (ny & mass.?)

This is eminently lookupable. The NY State law says:

(b) No person shall operate a bicycle unless it is equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred feet, except that a bicycle shall not be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a bicycle any siren or whistle.

So horns are OK as are anything else as long as it's not a siren or a whistle.
