bike rental in Paris?

Is anyone familiar with bike rentals in Paris, such as the locations of the cheap ones? Merci!

Don't know what your definition of cheap is, but I had good luck with these guys.

Paris has the public cycle hire scheme Vélib' that was started about 4-5 years ago? Is that what you had in mind?

Blue Marble cycles are not cheap for short-term rentals (their rate starts at €40 for the first day, and then decreases as the rental term gets longer). If you want to rent a bike for a week or longer, and you want a touring bike, they would be worth looking into.

The Vélib' system is great for short trips, but it gets increasingly expensive for longer ones (after the first hour and a half, it costs €8/hour to use the bike). You can return a bike to a station and then take it (or another one) a few minutes later, to start another rental with the first 30 minutes free, but that's not much good if you are doing a longer ride outside of town.

For short-term rentals of basic city bikes/hybrids, my wife and I have used Valmy Cycle, on the quai de Valmy along the Canal St. Martin. I haven't used Paris à Vélo c'est sympa, but their rates seem reasonable. If you read French, the association MDB has a list of bike shops in Paris and Île-de-France, including those that rent bikes (indicated by "L" for "location" in the services offered column).

Crazy really, if you were going to be there for any length of time you'd be as well off to buy one, and sell it when leaving. I hear Paris is woefully expensive in general though.
