Thought I'd share with you the build of my 1998 GT Pantera Restomod. Bought bone stock, including the tires even, in quite reasonable condition. While cool as a retro mountainbike, I already have a modern mountainbike that outperforms this one to the extent that I don't enjoy this on the track. Perhaps I'm spoiled. Therefore, I decided to convert this into a machine more geared towards daily use.

Here it is on the day I bought it. Apart from disintegrating decals and worn brake pads, not in too bad condition.

Here it is after stripping it down and adding a bunch of new parts:

Billy Bonkers tires

SKS Bluemels fenders

Panaracer tubes

Zanchetta front rack

Zoom handlebar with 100 mm rise

Brown faux leather grips and seat

Meroca crank with 38T narrow-wide sprocket

Single speed freewheel and Litepro tensioner

Brake pads and yellow cables

QR skewers

IKZI battery powered lights

While I kinda liked the minimalist look, I've decided to buy a new decal set to add a touch of color and heritage. Here's the final product:

I love the single speed simplicity, the smoothness of the ride, and the utility of the bike. And the fact that people actually stop to compliment me on the looks never gets old.

I have been out of the loop for a while with bike parts. What are some of the quieter freehub/freewheel options available today?

I have finally convinced my wife that if she intends to keep up with me, our boys, and be comfortable on trail rides, she needed a different bike. She prefers riding singlespeed (gets overwhelmed/confused by shifters :foo:) so I'm keeping this SS specific. I now have a lightly used, size medium, 2009-2012 Niner SIR 9 EBB disc frame on its way to me. It comes with the "Biocentric" EBB so I may upgrade to the "Biocentric II" model (I've read the 1st gen EBB had some issues). She isn't going to be putting down a ton of torque, but I just want to avoid issues and get one before they are unobtainable.

From the parts bin will be:

XFusion Slide 29 fork (2010)

Stans Arch EX 29" rims (2010)

Continental XKing 2.2" tires (for now)

Thomson cockpit

Avid brake levers

assorted other bits and pieces

The next bigger purchase, and my question, is around hubs to go with the Arch EX rims. My wife has sensitivities to noise so I'm trying to make this as pleasant as possible. Something like a buzzy Chris King or a Hope freehub is likely out of the question. I read that Onyx hubs are silent, but are definitely out of budget unless I find a deal. I believe Formula made an OEM SS hub but know very little about it. Something with a thread-on freewheel is also an option. What else out there comes in at the lower end of the noise scale that isn't cheap junk that will fail quickly?

Standard Shimano freehubs tend to be quiet, but was hoping to stay SS-specific to build a cleaner, stronger wheel.

Thank you in advance for any ideas!
