TLDR: it's Hoboken, New Jersey, birthplace of baseball and Sinatra.

"Every year, thousands of Americans die on streets that could be made safer — in crashes that better design would prevent. City after city has launched Vision Zero pledges, held press conferences, and watched the death toll rise anyway.

So what explains Hoboken?

Same country. Same cars. Same drivers. Same roads. And yet: nine consecutive years without a single traffic fatality in a city of sixty thousand people. While pedestrian deaths across America just hit a forty-one-year high, one square mile of New Jersey has recorded zero.

But here's the strange part.

The tools Hoboken used aren't expensive. They aren't secret. The federal case studies are free to download. Some of the most effective interventions cost twenty dollars per intersection. So why haven't Los Angeles, Washington D.C., or any other major American city been able to copy it?

To answer that, we need to look at what Hoboken actually did — and what every other city keeps refusing to."
Police said the chain of events that led to the stand-off was set into motion at 11 a.m., when there was a bizarre encounter between the driver of an SUV and two people riding bicycles on Headlands Road.

"He ran into one of them, it appears to be an intentional act, and then he turned around and confronted the other bike rider and physically assaulted him," Mentor Police Chief Ken Gunsch told FOX 8. "He got out of the car and physically assaulted him and then he fled the scene."

Rolling through reds, known as the Idaho stop and, in the UK, as a Benedict Cumberbatch, are part of my daily commute. If I wanted to stop at every red light, I would drive to work.

The self appointed policeman harassing Mr. Cumberbatch would not last long on the mean streets of Toronto.

So I live in an area where sidewalks on one side of the street are extra wide as they are meant for cyclists and pedestrians. You don't want to ride on the road in this area (residential, but people are not aware of their surroundings). Like most people, I do ride on the sidewalk and follow the rules -- but seriously, people are simply not self-aware of their surroundings. They are so glued to their phones either talking or staring at them that when I shout out "on your left" they have no idea what to do; or think I'm yelling out to someone else; or simply ignore me. Or people walk right in the middle of the sidewalk - not on the right or left - but right down the middle.

I'm thinking of getting something that will make some noise or just a buzzer to warn people but my boys have said that if I keep adding gadgets to my bike it will look like Pee-Wee Herman's!!! LOL... and they've threatened to buy me streamers for my handlebars. LOL!

If I am able to, I will ride on the side of the road. I have a blinker on the back of my bike, and a headlight and I wear a safety vest no matter what time of day I go out an of course, always wear a helmet.

What else can I do to ensure my own safety? Anything else that's a good idea to buy?
