Fatbikes are so slow

I'm guessing you'll need to be a Facebook user to see this video from the Birkie Fatbike race

Now that was exciting.
I got tired just watching it.:) How long was the race? |
Full race video?
This was nice to see , the snowy place is just amazing and the fatbike is sm sort of my unconscious dream :) |
Here's a link to the race info: Fat Bike Birkie | American Birkebeiner
There's a 27 km and 21 km route. I wasn't able to race it this year, my schedule has me staying close to home - but I'm planning a lot of fatbike races for winter 2018-2019. I found the video on Facebook fatbike page - https://www.facebook.com/fatbikedotcom/ and they have a great site dedicated to all things fatbike https://fat-bike.com/ |
I've gone up to 35 mph on my fat bike.
|
Me too, I get my Pug over 35 mph often. I'm always gear limited so I'm planning to change out my gear-ratio so I can go faster.
Last month I did a snow race (much like the Birchie), we were over 30 mph on snow... a little never-wreaking. |
I couldn't go 35 M.P.H. if I was being chased by a pack of wolves.:(
But it sure is fun to watch fat bike races. :) I liked the strategy of the winner. He stayed behind the grouped leaders and sprinted in the last seconds. Good timing I say. |
Wow. 30 mph in a sprint at the end of a race is stellar. Nice video. I've never owned a fat bike but I can see that I'm missing out...

They are riding on hard packed snow, on level terrain, with tires likely inflated to maximum allowed pressure. If you look at bike seats, most are raised to racing position, not for leisurely riding. Also looks like they have really light bikes (probably carbon all round), and not a single one of them has a suspension fork, fenders or a rack. Of course they are going fast, why wouldn't they be?

These are groomed ski trails, not that hard packed. I did a similar race in Minneapolis in February - 35K Fatbike Loppet: Max pressure will dig into these groomed trails, you need to run fairly soft (6-8 psi). |

Good grief, that must require a ton of wattage. Got a power meter? |

Still, 30MPH in your facebook video looks like a serious all out effort.
If I had that kind of power on tap, I'd crash for sure. |

Right?!? That video I posted, we got up to 20 mph at the start and it was chaos. Thankfully the crowd thinned by the time we got to a big descent (up to 10%) - I got over 30 mph ... totally nerve-wrecking
Having my wife push me around in a wheelchair is an experience I never want to repeat. Stay safe. |
Okay, so I don't have to ask, "How slow are they"?
I miss Match Game and Johnny Carson. |
Hell of sustained sprint. I’d be dead or hurling across the finish line.
|
Many years ago, I watched some kooks in speed skiing outfits ripping down a groomed, iced ski run on MTBs - speeds were around 85mph.
|
I say turf mixed curling in the winter O's and a couple of the 50 odd XC ski events and add this and cyclocross. This would be fun to watch. :giver:

But did you see anyone crash? |

Yes, indeed. Several. The clean runout at the bottom meant that people just slid a long way and ended up in a heap - nothing more than bruises.
