I'm guessing you'll need to be a Facebook user to see this video from the Birkie Fatbike race

For the non-Facebookers - here's a screenshot:

Now that was exciting.
I got tired just watching it.:)

How long was the race?

CrowSeph 03-13-18 04:44 PM

Full race video?
This was nice to see , the snowy place is just amazing and the fatbike is sm sort of my unconscious dream :)

Here's a link to the race info: Fat Bike Birkie | American Birkebeiner

There's a 27 km and 21 km route.

I wasn't able to race it this year, my schedule has me staying close to home - but I'm planning a lot of fatbike races for winter 2018-2019.

I found the video on Facebook fatbike page - https://www.facebook.com/fatbikedotcom/ and they have a great site dedicated to all things fatbike https://fat-bike.com/

I've gone up to 35 mph on my fat bike.

Hypno Toad 03-15-18 07:46 AM

Me too, I get my Pug over 35 mph often. I'm always gear limited so I'm planning to change out my gear-ratio so I can go faster.

Last month I did a snow race (much like the Birchie), we were over 30 mph on snow... a little never-wreaking.

PdalPowr 03-15-18 09:34 AM

I couldn't go 35 M.P.H. if I was being chased by a pack of wolves.:(
But it sure is fun to watch fat bike races. :)

I liked the strategy of the winner.
He stayed behind the grouped leaders and sprinted in the last seconds.
Good timing I say.

ptempel 03-15-18 12:01 PM

Wow. 30 mph in a sprint at the end of a race is stellar. Nice video. I've never owned a fat bike but I can see that I'm missing out...

They are riding on hard packed snow, on level terrain, with tires likely inflated to maximum allowed pressure. If you look at bike seats, most are raised to racing position, not for leisurely riding. Also looks like they have really light bikes (probably carbon all round), and not a single one of them has a suspension fork, fenders or a rack. Of course they are going fast, why wouldn't they be?

"Of course they are going fast"? Have you ridden a fatbike... on snow ... ? You make it sound so easy to go fast.

These are groomed ski trails, not that hard packed. I did a similar race in Minneapolis in February -
35K Fatbike Loppet:

Max pressure will dig into these groomed trails, you need to run fairly soft (6-8 psi).

On flat ground?

Good grief, that must require a ton of wattage.

Got a power meter?

No, that's on descents (8% to 10%).

I'm not that powerful :p

SHBR 03-21-18 08:16 AM

Still, 30MPH in your facebook video looks like a serious all out effort.

If I had that kind of power on tap, I'd crash for sure.

Right?!? That video I posted, we got up to 20 mph at the start and it was chaos. Thankfully the crowd thinned by the time we got to a big descent (up to 10%) - I got over 30 mph ... totally nerve-wrecking

After spending the night in the hospital, from my own preventable mistake, I've decided not to push my luck, when the end result will cause serious injury.

Having my wife push me around in a wheelchair is an experience I never want to repeat.

Stay safe.

Rollfast 03-21-18 11:01 PM

Okay, so I don't have to ask, "How slow are they"?

I miss Match Game and Johnny Carson.

Jseis 03-22-18 08:34 PM

Hell of sustained sprint. I’d be dead or hurling across the finish line.

krusty 03-25-18 04:29 PM

Many years ago, I watched some kooks in speed skiing outfits ripping down a groomed, iced ski run on MTBs - speeds were around 85mph.

Brob2 03-25-18 08:32 PM

I say turf mixed curling in the winter O's and a couple of the 50 odd XC ski events and add this and cyclocross. This would be fun to watch. :giver:

Not to be ghoulish.
But did you see anyone crash?

Yes, indeed. Several. The clean runout at the bottom meant that people just slid a long way and ended up in a heap - nothing more than bruises.

Yes Sir. Got the fatty max 23mph unless GPS lies  going downhill in the Texas hill country. The fat boy maneuvers better than I thought, it would and climbs like a billlygoat :p I love my fatboy platonically.

Yup, like downhill skiing, crashes at speed are at least on pliable, low-friction snow, and wearing more cover/layers over skin - way better than shorts/short-sleeve spandex on asphalt.
