I tried that experiment summer of 2015. Never again.

Balloon tires are not a direct replacement for good suspension.

This is true.

But even were I to run a rigid bike on rocky/rooty trails (or a HT in the case I am contemplating), I would still not want fat tires. Probably would go with 2.8 - 3.0 tires on a rigid.
