Beware New Exercises
Yesterday I tried an exercise that is new to me, the Cable Cross Pull.
I kept the weight down, I thought, to 30# on each side. Standing between the two verticals on the machine and pulling the cable to lift the 30# on each side was well within my capabilities, I thought. I did 4 sets of 12, 2 with each foot forward. With the nerve damage and muscle weakness was a bit unsteady on the last couple. But, overall, felt pretty good. Then 4x20 hanging leg lifts, a shower and off to the local family restaurant for dinner. This morning my lower back is stiff and sore. Did not expect that! But, when I think about it, that is a natural consequence to lateral loading of my body. Beware new exercises, they can be uncomfortable. |
Yup.... About a month ago,I went from doing leg presses to squats at the gym, and for a couple of days I thought my legs were going to fall off at the hip.
The only reason I'm sore this morning is from an unplanned dismount from my mountain bike yesterday. |
I got an email from our health insurance folks at work. (They send out weekly email newsletters with informative articles. Many have actually been helpful so I do read them.) A recent article extolled the greatness of kettlebell exercises. I promptly did a bit of research to find a proper kettlebell and set out to take on this new routine.
The workout 'circuit' just used 3 moves--the "swing", some type of squat and a deadlift. I didn't think too much about how all three were primarily using the legs. . . The next day I was sore. The second day I was more sore. The third day I contemplated applying for a handicapped parking permit. Anybody want to buy an essentially brand new kettlebell? |
I'm not sure what exercise you are describing, but if you pulling/lifting symmetrically and simultaneously, there's no lateral load.

Maybe, if both cables are pulled identically, unlikely, there will be counterbalanced stresses. But the stresses will still exist and have their effect.
After a day of work the back feels better. Tomorrow? ? |
