They Have My Address

In the past few days as soon as I sign in to Bike Forums I'm inundated with ads. Mainly on my Android devices. So many, so fast I can't use the site.

Can go all over the internet with no trouble. But sign in here and lots of ads, so fast it makes the site useless.

A couple were identified by AVG and Avast as phishing trojans.

Don't mind at all BF making money off me. Using the site is a fair trade. But this will severely limit my participation.

...or unless you use Firefox with Adblock even on Android... or some other ad blocker. I didn't add Adblock because of BikeForums, but it has worked silently here as well. To be honest, I've always used Firefox so I had no idea there were (many) ads.

But I guess I really need to pony up a few $ and subscribe.

Bear in mind that Android is developed by Google, the world's largest advertising company, as an advertising delivery platform first, with the shiny bits added afterwards in order to coax you into using their advertising delivery platform.

That Android is working exactly as designed, shouldn't be a surprise.

I use the AdBlock Plus Firefox plug-in on my browsers and it works great. I got so fed up with political ads on another forum (that prohibited political posts, BTW) that I had to do something.

Internet Brands has the worse mobile device performance, and their internet site is highly flawed, also. I think they depend almost entirely on interns and volunteers. Yet, the company is worth billions.

Soon the Mods will move this thread and few people will see it.

Interesting posts. Confirms that fingers can type reflexively without reading or exercising the cranial computer. A couple smack of carny shill like comments.

Oh well, after being here for several years using the site and accepting advertising as an acceptable price with the advent of phishing and trojans it may be time to move on. Sad that as I've met some nice people and had some good conversations. We'll see.

Heck, HO, please don't get your knickers in a twist - tsl is right - the googleplex has simply upped the ante. Don't leave - instead perhaps consider trying a different platform - or is Android your only ride? I've tried all flavors of computers, and there are times when all of them have displeased me - but not all at the same time.

Could be device specific. I'm totally Mac based and I've not noticed a uptick in ads. I don't use an ad blocker.

(decided to follow up and checked my web logs. Safari is constantly blocking frames from tpc.googlesyndication.com originating from bikeforums.net. Yet, I seem to see the normal amount of ads)

Returning here after a three year absence (living overseas) I was inundated with ads on my Android and PC. Once I paid the annual membership no more problems. Contributing to BF was well worth it for me.

you could always just sideload the adblock plus app on android, and block all adds system level, instead of using the firefox plugin. This will not only block adds, but block them in the 'freeware' apps as well. I do not wish to deprive BF, but at the same time, I don't trust ads not to be malicious. Catch 22 I guess.

I became displeased with the ads on my Win7 desktop, so I went Premium. I have Premium RWGPS and Strava, so why not here? Biking and the people I've met here are important to me. It's so little money for something I value. I understand that there's a thread in the culture that says it should all be free, but it's not. Someone always pays, somehow. If you don't pay openly, then you're just selling your eyeballs. I'd rather have the use of mine for myself.
