Winter Destinations this winter...?
 

Anyone looking forward to some warm winter riding in the tropics this upcoming winter. Sri Lanka is our choice year end and year out for winter sun and fun.

If anyone wants to come down to Louisiana, there's New Orleans with some interesting bike tours and also the MS Gulf Coast.

That's where I'll be in December. Even if the weather is crummy, the food is always good.

We don't have too much winter here in SoCal but when we want some we just go up into the mountains (we have a cabin near Big Bear Lake at 6,700 ft. of elevation) so we can play in the snow and enjoy the cold.

Difficult to remember "cold" since we've been suffering in a heat wave for the last several weeks!

Are you bringing a bike? I was reading about a 30 mile ride going from Kenner along the levee through the French Quarter and back. If you migrate over to Bay St. Louis, they have some pretty good rides. Home - Gulf Coast Bicycle Club

I appreciate the link. I think the best riding in the area is in the feliciana parishes just north of you in B.R. Have you ridden much up there? There are a lot of really great roads there.

I'll be going to the same place I go during the summer months - the Withlacoochee Trail or maybe the Suncoast Trail. :)

I was thinking about Ecuador Cotopaxi Sate Park and volcano to ride down for the adventurous or dim witted. Supposed to be the rainy season tho. I was also considering Mardis Gras and possible stop in Biloxi so New Orleans doesn't sound ad. My only problem with Asia is the long flight time and then I'd probably go to Vietnam or Thailand.

The wife does Tampa area every February - she claims to ride occasionally.
Real men (and some women) go skiing -- everybody north of the Mason Dixon must chime in. ;)

Staying here in Tucson, AZ . . . yup this is home and winter riding is fantastic.
Right now, mid-October, it is still in the 90s.

41 degrees outside this morning. I will be in Arizona for the winter in two weeks.

I'll ride as long as the roads and or trails are clear of snow and ice. Base layer, tights, jersey, vest and jacket. shoe covers, and long finger gloves. If there is enough snow, we break out the XC skis. or snow shoes.

Luckily at sea level, we can ride year round and not face more than a few days in the 30s. If it becomes a dry winter, like Jan - Mar of this year, partly sunny and 50s makes for a most refreshing 'winter' ride. (but then I die when the temps hit the 90s).

As for a fantasy winter cycling destination - how's Sicily? With the popularity of Vicenzo Nibali, I have heard, it's becoming quite the winter cycling location - warmer and less expensive than Italy's more northern and renown territories. Or some locations in southern Spain/Balearics; Ibizia, anyone?

Just got back from a few days in Sicily. I had planned to ride from Palermo to Ciminna (my family has roots there), but decided my time was better spent at Cefalu.

The winter cycling at home in SoCal is about as scenic with much better roads.

Anyplace is better than Chicago. I'll be riding more often this winter in my new hometown.

My wife's a school teacher and my job requires working weekends and holidays, so it's hard to get away during the winter. Maybe after we retire.

Last year, I did a 38 mile loop basically from Norwood up to Centreville and back around again. We actually started and ended at the Feliciana Retreat Center on 422, about 10 miles east of Norwood. It's a nice ride, with a few moderate rollers : 10/24/14 - East Feliciana Parish, LA Ignore the stats - I was generally taking it easy, although I still ran out of breath here and there.

I'm headed back down there again two weeks from Tuesday, for the Deep South Regional Star Gaze. I hope to ride again this year. Usually great weather this time of year.

Based on the blog you're probably already familiar with the Feliciana Retreat Center then. It's a nice place.

Around here lots of people fat bike the trails in the snow. I'd rather ski. We usually plan a trip to St.George Utah in March for some mountain biking. The road biking looks tempting and we may take both down this year.

Last winter we biked around Ishigaki and Iriomote which are Japanese islands off Tiawan. I'd love to get back there again for some more riding and snorkelling.
