Case of thumping tire Solved!

I finally found the time to find the cause of my tire thump.I reset the tire many ways and times. The result was always a big zero.I pulled the tube out and replaced it with a new tube, different manufacturer.Presto problem solved!
I found the stem area with a smaller circumference than the rest of the tube.So inflate and the stem area is less than the remaining tube. Thus causing a thump.Right?
The tube actually has a history. The tube was in a cheap tire.14 bucks I believe. The tire always had a wiggle. At speeds over say 17 it was noticeably annoying.I thought it was from the tire being cheap and hanging on a bike shop discount stand too long.So I said I have to buy better tires.Hence the Gator Skins. Then the thump. Are you kidding me.But all is good now.
On a lighter note it is really unusually warm on the east coast.I took today off last week and lucked out.I drove to the seaside and put in 20 miles.Ita Nov 16 and people are in bathing suits on the beach. This is unheard of for this time of year.

What a relief to have that solved, eh? We had 60deg again today. Unreal.

The inflated size of the tube is dictated by the TIRE, not the other way around. More likely cause was probably not pushing the stem reinforcement up into the tire during inflation, causing that thick rubber underneath the tire bead. Always inflate, deflate, push the stem UP into the tire, and reinflate.

The tube will always expand to fill the available space, unless it is too much, and it fails!

I'm also of the opinion that reseating everything is probably what fixed it, you probably had a pinch somewhere or a bead not quite seated. It's normal for the stem area to expand less than the rest of the tube when it's out of the tire. After all, the stem and its reinforcement can't expand.

Next time you do this, view the tire from the side right where the tire and rim meet as you rotate the tire. Many tires have a raised piece of rubber right at that point. It will allow you to observe whether or not the tire is seated evenly all the way around. It is pretty easy to see when it is not and that will always cause an annoying thump. I've never had a tube be the source of the problem. It has always been caused by uneven seating of the tire on the rim.

It does not take much for the thump to occur, just a slight bit of the bead not seated properly can make for a really annoying thumping, especially if you are running higher pressures for road tires. I agree with the others that opined you took care of the problem when you re inflated your tire, the bead was allowed to properly align, and the tire was smooth once again. Gatorskins are a somewhat "harder" tire construction than most road tires, and this amplifies the thumping sensation. I have used them exclusively, since 2012, and I swear by them:thumb: (no, I don't swear at them:wtf: when mounting them....,) for my daily riding, about 16,000 miles since going to them, I get 4K to 5K miles out of a pair.

If you have any more problems mounting the tires, put some dish-washing liquid along the tires bead before pulling the bead over the rim, it will ease the bead's sliding over the rim and will simply dry until it gets washed away when you ride in wet conditions. Just wipe away any that gets on the tread before you ride, that can make for an interesting little handling quirk if you are really lucky;).
