I can't hear
It seems as though most of the electronic devices that have audible alerts are so high frequency that they would have to be implanted somewhere in my head to hear them. On my iPhone I have the ring tone set to the Klaxon - that always gets my attention as as well as anyone within 100 feet of my phone.
It seems to me that manufacturers might consider something more audible than a cricket beep.
Just needed to get that off my chest....
Happy Xmas!

So why are you whining about it here?
Do you go to the Apple forum to whine about bicycle problems?

Well, tsl, I figured Viking55083 came here to whine about it because we're older and more likely to understand the frustrations with things designed without us in mind. I also figured that while the iPhone was the example given, the real complaint is with the beeps, etc., from things like bike computers, GPS units and/or HRMs, so that would be bike-related. I'll have to admit, though, there's not really anything directly bike-related in the post.

Probably because when riding on a path people come up from behind and ring a little bell that he can't hear.
I ride on the road but I inline skate on the path. My hearing is not that poor, but with wind noise through the helmet straps and other background noise, I sometimes realize that the last noise was a bell as they go by.

Maybe time for hearing aids ?.
Not particularly cheap, but worth it. The behind-the-ear models have an open ear design that are very comfortable.
I just ordered a new set from Coscto that have a Bluetooth link to my iPhone for streaming a phone call or iTunes music. Amazing technology.

I was thinking about my Garmin bike computer. It apparently has audible alerts, but I've never heard them. Same with a heart monitor watch. You get a beep when you hit a certain heart rate, apparently. At least the phone gives you a range of ring tones.
As for hearing aides, I have a serious case of tinnitus along with high frequency hearing loss which is not helped by amplification. The constant ringing in my ears is the loudest thing I hear. Fortunately, I've learned to ignore it. It drives some folks nuts!
I figured my older friends would empathize.

Most cell phones also have a vibrate alert mode which can be felt when carried.
Since a great many older folks have hearing deficits, I would think manufactures would start concentrating on making their equipment more compatible to their needs.
Perhaps all the developers are in their 20's.

Just in case the OP was referring to sounds while riding his/her bike, consider Cat Ears.
No ... not these:

I *always* use vibrate mode, because I can't stand listening to other peoples phones ring, and see no need to contribute to the problem. Also, no one else needs to know when I have a text or call coming in.
I've been using Replay XD cameras recently, and their only alert is vibration, which works better than any audio tone in windy conditions when cycling, and also works really well on a full-face motorcycle helmet.

less wind noise
+ Cat Ears. They help.
These: Cat-Ears, LLC - Reduce Cycling Wind Noise (Not headphones). Also check: Hearing Aid Forums | Hearing Loss | Hearing Aids
Boosting my Kirkland (Resound from Costco) to +2 w/ the remote in 'restaurant' mode; using Cat-Ears (full cover version yesterday 46-55F, wind 5-10 mph) enables me to understand most of my companions comments.

Hearing loss at certain frequencies is common with age. By the time he was in his 60s my granddad couldn't clearly hear a normal conversation and blasted the TV volume. But he could hear low pitched rumbling sounds I couldn't: the school bus coming in the morning; and trains miles away.
My own selective hearing loss is tuned to the female speaking voice. Fortunately it doesn't affect enjoying their singing voices. As acquired maladies go, I recommend it highly.
Health problems and medications can affect hearing too. Allergies, seasonal congestion from exercising in cold weather, and many other maladies and prescription or OTC meds can affect hearing. My ears seldom feel congested, but when my sinus allergies are acting up my senses of smell and hearing feel dulled as well. If I take a Sudafed I can hear more clearly and my sense of smell returns.
Many opioid pain relievers can cause temporary hearing loss. Remember Rush Limbaugh's mysterious hearing loss in the 1990s, which equally mysteriously was healed? Oxycontin. After a car wreck 14 years ago fractured my back and neck I had a prescription for Oxycontin. Stuff made my ears feel like they were full of wool. Hated the overall sensation too - jittery, twitchy, not pleasant at all. Never had that refilled after the first batch.

I have pretty poor hearing - thanks to US Army. Add the wind whistling through the holes in my head and I'm really deaf.

I have typical hearing loss from gun fire over 30 years. Those automatic weapons I used to play with are really bad for your hearing. The lady who tested me even knew which was my dominant hand by the test results.

If there is an affliction related to the aging process and you're not experiencing the problem, you're just not old enough.
