Hot air rises, as any hot air balloon knows. So, it is less dense than cold air...

Correct...but low density air is extremely cold too.

Because of the lower pressure [at high altitude], the air expands as it rises, which causes it to cool. Thus, high altitude air is cold, which causes a characteristic alpine climate. This climate dramatically affects the ecology at high altitude.

When I lived in Idaho, I just put on a snowmobile suit, fur lined gloves, and a pair of mukluks when it got cold. Oh, for a hat, I used a WW II type "bomber" cap with the furry flaps.
I dislike being cold.

The secret to making winter riding fun for me was to throw out all expectations of performance. I don't even put the computer on the bike (screen goes blank around 0F anyway) and my HR monitor goes under the cuffs and inside the Bar Mitts. I just ride hard enough to feel myself breathing heavily and enjoy the scenery until my toes get cold. On my mutt bike in full winter dress I average about 12 mph for an hour or two on snowy roads. Still a whole lot more fun than the indoor trainer. I log my rides with Ride with GPS but the phone stays in an inside pocket and I don't look at it until I get home.

LOL, I know what it looks like but it really is just condensed breath. Most times I get two long ones like that but normally at the sides of my mouth.

The tough days are when you blink and your eyelashes freeze together. Now that's a problem.

jamesdak,
According to "The Rules" you are badass, no bones about it. Even if you are comfortable riding in those temps, not many here do, or will. We have a few folks living in AK, that ride no matter what, as members here, they get my vote for ironmen. Kudos for riding, period.

^^^ Oh wow, just plain beautiful. Utah has some fantastic scenery, from what I have seen here, and watching the ToU, on TV, each year. I really want to ride out there, some day, some day......

Tour of Utah

Most years the ToU rides literally right past my house. So I take the day off and go out in the side yard to watch the go by on MY cycling route. :-)
