The Southern Inyo Double - Now with Video

Did the Southern Inyo Double last weekend. That is a ride through some of the interior valleys east of the Sierra. Beautiful, expansive views and great company.

The star of the show? The winds. We had some big storms run through last weekend, and we caught the leading edge of them. A friend took some video taken of the tempest, but they're on Facebook, and I've got to figure out how to share that with you. Upwind from us were the Olancha Sand Dunes. I've always wanted to go see them. I needn't have bothered ... that night, they came to see ME. To give you an idea of how gusty they were, one of the guys went to clean his bike earlier this week, and this is what he found.

Yes, it was that bad. We got sandblasted. It was bad enough that in the middle of the night, I donned my sunglasses. It was a choice dim vision or sand in the eyes.

And the winds got worse after I went through. Supposedly, they got to 60+ MPH and concern for that and flash flooding, they pulled some of the stragglers off the course.

Good times, eh?

The funny thing is that one of the guys that did the ride (that is his cassette) is a new double century rider. He got a baptism of fire that night (even had to change a flat in the middle of that sandy tempest), and loved it. It is the kind of thing you never forget.

Lots of pics from the better parts of the day on FB, Biker395, and a couple of videos. I heard ride reports at the Bull Shifter club meeting last night.

OK ... One of the guys FINALLY uploaded some of the video from this ride with the epic winds. The entire thing is is a pleasant view, but if you're short on time, skip over to 10:45 ... That is where the fun really began.

Steve (the tandem captain) just finished his trip report. It makes for a great read, especially the part where they got blown across US395 and into the sage on the west side of the road. Oy.

Nah ... doubles like this are the ones you talk about years later! And you know how it is ... it sucks (or is that "blows"?) when you're doing it, but after the fact and years later, it makes for good conversation. Every time I look at that video with all the sand flying about, I laugh at the absurdity of trying to ride through all that on a bike.

Quite true Vic, much like Butter-Flood . . . but still; glad I didn't ride this one.
