Retro decides to retire.
 

I recently decided that it's the right time to quit my job. I started working in my dad's produce market at about age 7 or 8. I'm 73 now so it's been a long time. I have some anxiety about both finances and about what I'm going to do with myself but I'll have those no matter when I take this next step. I've spent a couple of days in mourning and now I feel like I'm ready to face the next adventure. Gonna be interesting.

My bikes are all tuned up and ready to ride, but it's snowing. No problem - I can ride tomorrow.

Filing time is easy.... volunteer and help others by passing on your knowledge and wisdom. Be a mentor to a teenager, you'll feel great.

I have triplet grandsons who are 15 and want to learn to drive. I already taught their older sister a couple of years ago. It's an interesting job because you get a lot of one-on-one time with them. There is also an elementary school within walking distance of my condo. If they have a use for me, I might volunteer there. A couple of years ago I helped a 2nd grade boy to advance 3 grade levels in reading.

Congrats on your retirement, and good luck with everything. :) I'm more disabled than retired, but I choose to call it early retirement. Besides the biking & thrift store shopping, I've been learning to cook better than I used to. I'm naturally thin, so no weight problems, so far. ;)

Retired 09/30/15 and it took about 3 months to get acclimated. I'm enjoying life and have plenty to keep me busy.

Edit: And I don't miss work!

Not much of a selling point. I think that I spend way too much time posting on BF now.

Great move! Now you can focus on cycling and all of those other projects you wanted to do. I’m your age and have been retire for five years. I’m rarely bored and have complete lots of projects.

I'm 73. I functionally retired last January and completely in August. Despite having the luxury of no financial worries and being able to ramp down time over the two/three years prior I was still uncertain anxious about detaching entirely. Should not have worried. As I quickly realized, going to work at all had become an unwanted distraction. As said/implied by others...retirement is the best job I've ever had.

A perspective bit....During my back in the day, 40 to 60 hour work weeks every 15 minute home remodeling/maintenance job took all weekend. Today they only take me a couple of hours.

Congrats RG! Check out St. Louis Recreational Cyclists. Mostly retirees who ride during week days. Some of the rides are close to where you live.

My wife is retiring next month, but I plan on working for another 4 years until I qualify for full Social Security.

You sleep when you want and eat when you want, now that's what I call really living. Congratulations and enjoy.

Congratulations, and best of luck with deciding what to do with the extra time, RG. The time with the grandkids sounds great, and I'll bet the nearby elementary school would love having you as a volunteer. I am sure you will find plenty of constructive things to take up your slack times, Stapfam has long said that he has never been busier than when he retired, Gil, and his grandkids, keep him hopping. Lots of time to do some of those builds you have thought about, and riding will probably be way up there for you.

I have had to come to grips with the fact that I am pretty much partially retired now. Construction downturn in our area, and my health concerns have made this necessary, though it is very hard to accept the fact, for me. Wasn't ready at all, but the economy crash, and subsequent military building cut backs from the sequester, killed off our business flow here. So my full retirement is most likely 1 or 2 years away, at most, unless something surprising happens. Maybe starting my own engineering consulting business is possible now.
