The Winds of Spring
Spring has been a little chiller than normal this year, and we had a crazy low amount of snow this past winter. But at least the winds haven't disappointed, todays ride made for a great workout. We have had a lot of days with winds above 20mph and some with gusts in the 30/40+ range. Got to love spring !

Thumbs up for finding the motivation to ride uphill into the wind .

Its been unusually windy here this spring, and during the late winter as well. If I wanted to ride it had to be into the wind at times. It did make the days with light winds very enjoyable, when they came about.

We seem to have received our March Winds in April, this year. I've been learning to love (heh!) riding into 30+mph headwind gusts, and picking my MUPs carefully so I am only exposed to the wind on the downwind side of my ride.

Headwinds. When else can you cram a 30mi ride into 20??
|
Very windy here lately, too. The last 23 miles of my 62 mile ride on 4/2 was straight into a 12 mph wind (except for one glorious 1.5 mile section of tailwind near the end) and then on 4/9 I bailed on my plan to ride a century seeing it would be cold and very windy and after starting to ride the metric, I opted for a 42 mile option after 25 miles of battling 15 mph sustained winds with 25mph gusts.

In West Texas, any day with winds under 20 mph is considered calm...

Weather here in coastal Rhode Island is the same, very windy or rain and windy. Wind today is not too bad but rain is threatening and that combination "dampens" enthusiasm. So far mileage for the year is way down. I hope hot and humid gets here soon.

I've got it easy: Even though it's been windy, I've been riding my C&V, which is steel and has 13mm rim height. It is a huge difference from alloy and 25mm rim height. The narrower frame just barrels through the headwind, and there is little or no wind resistance from the sides.

I ride my local greenway loop that follows the creek beds. It's low with thick stands of trees and brush so the wind is really never a factor.
It's a beautiful ride with all the wild flowers and lush vegetation. Gotta love spring time in Texas! Won't be long though and we will have those 100+ days and early morning rides to beat the heat! |
I had a lot of wind on my ride yesterday too but I was going around a lot of curves plus there were trees and hills blocking the wind in some areas. Threat of rain here too; had my rain jacket in my center jersey pocket and even though the clouds were very dark most of the day . . . no rain. Here it is on Strava so you can see how much winding about I did"
