New Old Guy on the Road
As the title states, I'm just another old guy starting out on a new adventure. I accepted a weight loss challenge back in February and lost 42 lbs in just over 2 months. I went from 220 down to 178 and never felt better. I took up riding road bikes the last part of April and have gotten seriously hooked on it. Since the middle of April I've ridden an average of 75 miles per week, with most being in the 20 - 30 mile range. I just rode a 57 mile tour on Saturday, the day before my 54th birthday, so I'm pretty happy with my progress so far. I look forward to frequenting this forum and learning from the more experienced among you. Thanks for posting your collective wisdom here, it's a real help for noobs like me!

Thanks. I went from being sedentary and eating everything in sight to walking an average of 9 miles a day with light weight training and consuming no more than 800 calories a day. Basically, I rebooted my entire system. I'm back to a more normal ~2000 calories a day now while still being very active. I hit the gym at 05:00 every morning for an hour and ride my bike as stated above, mostly in the evenings. It's a lifestyle change that I'm truly enjoying.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on flipping the script! Bicycles are as much fun, now, as when we were kids!

Welcome and well done on the achievements so far.
I always admire people who can get up and exercise at that time in the morning.
I've still got 2.5 hours sleep to go at that time.

Great job Thomas!! You'll find there are lots of similar stories here. But losing that much weight over such a short period of time is remarkable. I lost 60 pounds but probably over 12-18 months. Like you, the method was simply more calories out than calories in.
I'm convinced your cycling mileage will continue to increase as time goes by. Let us know if you need any help but it sure sounds like you're already on the right track.

Dittoes to all the above. I recently posted to this Fifty-Plus Forum, “Always fun watching a fellow 50+ take up this great sport.”

Fantastic! Seems to me we 50+ers own this sport. We raced and toured back in the bike boom heydey and many of us are still going. Good to see you hook up with an old friend.
So it seems; I started as a tourist on a five speed Schwinn Suburban in 1971. Yesterday a colleague was telling me that her husband was taking up cycling, and I told her about MAMILS (Middle-Aged Men inLycra; though I think cycling keeps us at least "middle-aged."
'
She said he's not not into Lycra, and I replied, "But he will be."

Hey, that's excellent progress. I've been back in the saddle 10 months and still haven't broken the 50 mile single day ride mark. A few 40 milers and working my way up. And I've dropped 40+ pounds, but it took years, from 205 to 160, where I've stayed -- give or take 5 lbs -- for a few years.

Losing 42lbs in two months...
Averaging 75 miles per week on the bike...
Riding 57 miles for my birthday ride...
How I feel after doing all of this?... Priceless.
Good job Thomas. Made a credit card commercial for ya.

You are not old. You know why not? Because I am 51 and I refuse to be old in three years.
When I was in college and up to 265 lbs. at 6'2", the best piece of medical advice I got came from a doctor who I went to see for foot pain. (I worked as a stock boy in the cafeteria and was always on my feet, often carrying heavy loads.) After examining me it went like this:
Doc: "You know why your feet hurt?"
Me: "No. Why?"
Doc: "Because you're fat. You need to lose weight."
Lost 90 lbs. in nine months through diet change and cycling. It was a lot easier to do because I was young. Makes your accomplishment look Herculean.
