There is long-term chronic overtraining and short-term acute overtraining.
Chronic overtraining is nasty - women stop menstruation, heart damage, weak bones, liver damage and blood chemistry all over the place, etc. This develops over months or years.
Short-term accute overtraining is different. It can and does occur even with low volumes of exercise in just a couple of weeks. Irritability, unable to sleep, can't get the heart rate up during exercise (classic), loss of appetite, maybe an unexplained head cold - all symptoms that a few easy days are required, that's all.
At 53 I can say without a doubt that it takes longer to recover than when I was 43. The OP is 64. It certainly can't hurt to take a few easy days. Go see a movie or wax the car instead. OP has nothing to loose.
