It not only helps you recover, but keeps you more mobile in everyday life.
When it comes to recovery there seems to be an almost singular focus on food. While proper nutrition is important it is still only one part of recovery and I applaud you for the mat and roller. I need to use my roller more too.

Another part of recovery is getting enough rest. The body does not get stronger during exercise but during recovery after exercise and getting enough sleep is extremely important. Americans particularly don't get enough sleep. I took a 1.5 hour nap after Mass today.

If I do long rides (over 50 miles at pace) then I start recovery with a beet salad and apple cider vinegar. I follow with a good hot shower and sometimes a 15 minute nap.

Then, I take the dog for a brisk 2-3 mile walk for about 30 minutes and relax the rest of the day or go kayaking for an hour.

Recovery done with the beets and vinegar doing most of the work.

Water, usually a 40 oz glass, maybe even more. Sometimes a few swigs of OJ out of the carton, too. While drinking that I look at the newspaper (I still get one delivered). Like someone mentioned above I might also do some sweat-inducing household chores (mowing the lawn, etc) before taking a shower. I usually ride first thing in the morning and don't consume anything before leaving in the AM except for drinking a glass of water. And I don't like eating just after getting back from a ride as it tends to make me drowsy. I don't believe in all that marketing malarkey about recovery drinks/proteins, etc.

Old man's approach

I ride 3 to 4 days a week 20 to 30 miles with total ascent of 600 to 1200 ft. When I get home the first thing I do is drink bottle Premier Protein then within a half hour lunch. Since I have been doing that routine I have noticed I have improved my performance. Just did a personal best on one of the segments of a regular rides. Not bad after 7 years of riding and that I am 74.

.4g protein and 1.2g carb per kilogram of body weight after a hard ride. I make a mix of natural sugar, maltodextrin, and flavored whey protein in a pint of water and put it in the fridge before I leave or take it along in the car in a cooler.

Many contained variations of vinegar or soured wine, brine, honey, herbs, ginger, even garlic. It didn't spoil easily and could be carried for months on military expeditions and drunk more safely than whatever water they might find afield. There was some vitamin C remaining from whatever vegetables or fruits were pickled, and some folks find the beverages surprisingly soothing to the stomach in hot weather. I tend to lose my appetite when I'm overheated, so these homebrewed energy drinks help keep up my appetite as well. Wish I'd thought about it years ago when I worked on a non-air conditioned freight dock loading and unloading trucks. I could hardly ever eat during lunch breaks in hot weather and my energy faded during the rest of the shift.

The tea is after a morning ride.

Later rides are followed by beer.

I have standards that must be retained, and beer plus IPads leads to even more rubbish from me on the forums.

Whatever jppe has been doing, I would check it out. Heck, he probably did a few laps of Boston Commons just for fun after his 43 days in the saddle.

Usually, I hit the shower first, then I have a cup of strong coffee and chicory.

I might have some whey protein in milk or a meal after shower and coffee.

Coffee perks me up after the ride (pun intended )

I do some stretching as I'm putting things away and then eat a good breakfast. Orange juice is a good carb source . I do some chores then get cleaned up. Later that day I'll go for a walk to get the blood flowing into my legs for quicker recovery.

I used to do the sports and protein drinks but found regular food to be better for me.

Eat what works for you, but definitely stretch and get some carbs in within the first 20-30 minutes.

The rides are usually 50+ mi and are hammer sessions for me. While the racers talk I am doing intervals. So at 74 I drink chocolate milk, nuts and some carbs. Since about age 60 I usually need a two hour nap. I do wonder what the country side looks like. I usually just see back wheels.

Cramps after a ride, sure I've had a few nasty ones. Prepping myself and my bike before a ride, Proper hydration and diet, yeah bla bla bla and all that Is a ritual I never miss,,, Oh yeah Coffee Is King

After a ride I stretch down and continue to hydrate keeping my urine as near to clear as possible, just like my pre-ride prep. A cup of rice Is good and some fruit.
I don't think of It as recovery time, I think of it as repair time. The next day after a workout ride I do a recovery spin as soon as I get up and re-hydrate from the nights sleep ~ 7 hours with no fluid Intake ya know~These 'Spins' are half the distance of the workout ride and half the Intensity.

That's about It.

Bingo! LOL

There's pictures to download off the camera and process. Posting them to a Facebook album for the ones I rode with. Posting them to the meetup group I rode with. Comment and chat with my riding group about the ride on Facebook and Meetup. RidewithGPS file to check to make sure it's uploaded. Bike Forums to check.

Who the heck has time to eat something post ride? LOL.
