6C and drizzle today. No way. Too old and wussy now.

Forecasting 3C with 90% rain tomorrow morning (5 mm/hour). I'll ride. This keeps me dry and warm...

I'm a bicycle wimp. My floor for riding is around 60 deg. F. When the temperature is lower, I stay active by running, skiing cross country, or snowshoeing. As cycling season approaches, it's spinning class a couple of times a week. Floor for winter activities is around 15 deg. F., and also wind speed dependent.

In My Basement, I have an old MTB with studded tires on it to grab when there is ice on the road & sidewalks.
To ride to get places .. here it has been 28 and dry or warmer and snowed. but it is a week , not months duration I'm only 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean , a great temperature moderator.. Columbia gorge is where the cold air masses move to the west. so Portland often got Snow the coast did not. .... |
Here in N Lower Michigan we are chilly. It's been a struggle to ride unless it's on the trails where the wind isnt gusting like on the open road. Tomorrow we are still in the 40s but at least sunny. We are having a very chilly spring up here.

I put some studded tires on my MTB and was out this winter in 30° weather. Snow boots with 2 pairs of socks, ski gloves, my warmest tights and a decent cycling jacket. It was 100° here 2 weeks ago but lately it's been in the 50s° Going out tomorrow for 50 miles in predicted 51° mostly cloudy weather. After a long hard winter 50° seems balmy.
I was caught out with the wrong gloves once, couldn't open my energy bar wrapper, took 10 minutes to get my gloves back on. Stopped in a park where a very understanding gentleman let me lean in his truck window and warm my hands with his side heater vent. |

You can carry extra thermal or ski-clothing in bike bags and/or a backpack. But only put these extra clothing on, when you need it, or else you will start sweating and cool down.
Don't bicycle in nature on your own, if it freezes, since you may freeze to death if you get wounded and your phone doesn't work. |
Whatever it is that I get out of biking, I find that I just don't enjoy it when I'm all bundled up for the cold. I'm also a runner and will run outside any day of the year when it's not icy, including sub-zero on occasion. But biking is another story. For instance, my hands are sensitive to the cold (touch of Reynauds) and biking at around 50F means double layering my gloves to the point where it's tough to operate the controls. Makes me wish for the heated grips that I had when I rode motorcycles a long time ago!
Anyway, mid-50s is about my limit these days (and we're getting plenty of that in southern Michigan this year!). |
Never too cold in DC for me to ride -- commuting or recreational. Coldest I've ridden is temps in the 20s -- no problem with proper attire.
