I don't pay too much attention to existing Strava segments created by other riders because they seldom fit my habits. Some segments begin or end in risky places -- too near stop signs or traffic lights, etc. Other segments don't quite mesh with my preferences for interval training, so I don't use them for maximum effort.
So I created my own private segments that better match my preferences for training rides. Mostly a sequence of half-mile 2%-3% grades, spaced apart enough for recovery between maximum efforts. No need for audio cues because I already know the routes.
I tried the voice prompts for interval training with Cyclemeter and others but these rarely correspond with the actual terrain features where I ride. I'd probably use the voice prompts for interval training if I used an indoor trainer.
Turn by turn navigation would be handy for exploring new routes at a more leisurely pace. But I'll need to pony up for a data plan for my phone to make it work reliably. Presumably there's too much lag time relying on GPS alone.

Google Maps (free) and RideWithGPS (premium/paid version) allow you to download data for offline use.

Yup, I downloaded Google Maps, OsmAnd maps and Maps.me for offline use. All work as maps but none work with voice turn by turn navigation on my iPhone 4s. Google Maps and Maps.me are the fastest for traditional visual navigation. OsmAnd was sluggish and glitchy.
