Back to riding after a long time away.

Hello, my name is Frank and I am getting back into riding after a long time away. Had surgery in 2001 that has kept me off a bike but now retired I am giving it a try again. Had not realized how much I missed it and how much fun it was and is now.
Be safe, Frank.

Glad you're back. I had colon cancer in 2003 and I started riding in 2004. The cancer came back in my liver in 2005, and cycling probably saved my life. I got away from it in about 2012 and recently came back. I think the key is not constantly pushing for more distance and more speed, but to set reasonable modest goals. Pushing to go farther and faster results in burnout - at our age, reasonable distances are the key. Just don't stop.

Welcome back! It has been 25 years for me, and back on the same bike. I am having a blast, and feel like a kid again.

...except at lights and posted intersections when traffic is present. Just kidding.

Enjoy yourself!

I am 59, and just started back riding a little over a year ago. I have a different take on pushing yourself. I think it's good to continue to push for more distance and more speed, but you're right, at a certain age you have to be careful not to push too far, too fast. Push a little further and a little faster - but be sensible and willing to cut back when necessary - and don't over do it.

Thanks all for your responses. I have found that riding when it is 95* and humid is not the time for me to push my limits. Will need to be sensible and build up gradually.

My advice.. find a buddy or join a club.
Especially in the weather that we're experiencing in the Heartland these last few days..
No time for screwing around if you are not acclimated to A. Riding B. The heat and C. Riding in the heat.

Be safe. Keep in touch!
