Best song to push on through

What's that one song that ALWAYS picks you up & gets the pedals spinning. I have mine, but am open to more - y'see I often tire easily.

Today I was on my first real ride of this ND spring. Of course I rode into the wind to start. When I turned for home, somehow I was riding into the wind again!

Half way back & I am dragging! But, that one song came on - the one that makes me go, picks up the cadence, makes me smile ear to ear, & I remember how much fun it is.

For me, it's "I Gotta See Jane" by Golden Earring. But then it ended, I was back to the grind.

So give me more - name the song & artist that always helps.

LesG 04-22-19 05:20 PM

Wipe Out by Safaris... Ventures did a pretty good version too.

Lemond1985 04-22-19 05:34 PM

1980's Geoffrey Downes stuff from the Tour de France has lasted me quite a few listenings, always makes me wanna go ride. I dare you not to crank the volume at the 5:00 minute mark:

Wileyrat 04-22-19 06:10 PM

"Highway to H*ll" or pretty much anything else by AC/DC.

b_young 04-22-19 07:00 PM

I agree with AC/DC. Thunderstruck is mine.
Van Halen - Panama has a tempo set for a nice cadence.

skidder 04-22-19 07:05 PM

Since you're already familiar with Golden Earring, I'll throw in 'Radar Love'.
The Tubes - 'White Punks on D0pe', Driving All Night, and Turn Me On.
Harry Nillsson - Jump into the fire (its all about that bass)
Grandmaster Flash - White Line (really thumpin' bass line works wonders for cadence!)
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run and Thunder Road
Joe Satriani - Summer Song
Talking Heads - life during wartime
Tommy and Dorsey Burnette - Tear it Up
Queen - Don't stop me Now
. . . and too many early Beatles songs to mention in one post.

You are out riding in nature. Why contaminate the experience with urban noise? Get in tune with yourself, your bike, and whatever is happening all around you. Cycling affords a chance to breath, think, recharge and get in touch with your environment. Happy 50th Earth Day!

It all depends on what kind of a ride you are doing. Workout, commute, tour. Sometimes the music is on and sometimes not.

Hondo Gravel 04-22-19 09:23 PM

AC/DC Jailbreak or Slayer Angel Of Death. While riding no music too dangerous in route.

skidder 04-22-19 09:29 PM

Aerosmith or the Yardbirds - Train kept a Rollin'
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to love
Public Enemy - Fight the Power
Patti Smith - People have the Power
The Interrupters - By My Side and/or Take Back the Power
Nick Lowe (or Elvis Costello) - What's so Funny about Peace Love and Understanding
The Offpsring - Come out and Play
The Jam - Thick as Thieves or Happy Together
A lot of ZZ Top's catalogue
Motorhead- Ace of Spades and Get Back in Line
The Who - I Can't Explain

My outside stereo system to crank up some AC/DC before a ride.

Every time this subject comes up I go with this reply, to me the best cadence song there is with a consistent 6 minute bass line that drives through the whole song. That said it's always in my head not my ears.

....and Stewart Copeland setting the beat !

On these incipient popcorn threads, there’s always a subscriber who goes off-topic to futilely dissusade those who listen to music. As an urban cyclist, to me urban noise is cars, trucks, sirens, horns, etc.

In reply to the OP. I have in the past listed my playlist on my profile page.

I recently got an I-pod and have been voraciously seeking tunes with cycling in mind. My criteria are listed in this post...:

On stiff hills then, even a low cadence, say 50-60, can be beneficial. I select my playlist not only by tempo but by the melody and harmony. So on the flats or downhills, the music is a pleasant accompaniment.

My main criterion to put a tune on my playlist is "Do I want to hear this while struggling up a hill (and do I want to hear it more than once, since it is on my playlist)?".

BTW, don't knock Lawrence Welk; he had good musicianship. :notamused: If you object to his tunes, IMO, Big Band standards (and Classic Rock) are great for cycling. :D

In particular there was a similar thread to the current one:

No, not what music you listen to on your ipod - plenty of threads there already.

More specifically - when you are in a world of serious hurt while riding, what are your favorite songs that help you keep pushing through the pain? Please post just a few favorites.

Though this is like choosing who is my favorite child, I made an arbitrary limit of ten songs and selected my ten top "push songs" out of 250. It could change at any time.

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Andrews Sisters
Stars and Stripes Forever John Phillip Sousa
Gonna Fly Now (Theme from "Rocky") Bill Conti
Stumblin' In Chris Norman & Suzi Quatro
Feelin' Stronger Every Day Chicago
Hold On Tight Electric Light Orchestra Part II
You're the One That I Want Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta
Gimme Shelter Rolling Stones
My Old School Steely Dan
Eye of the Tiger Survivor

...IMO push songs are effective performance-enhancers and leave no tell-tale residues in the blood stream. :innocent:

Indeed I have a subset of my playlist entitled "Hill Country" for that purpose, with continuous up-tempo tunes.

Apropos of a subscriber to the Fifty-Plus Forum, my playlist has Big Band tunes, and Rock and Roll Golden Oldies, rare songs after 1980. :50:

PS: Since that thread in 2009, some additional favorite push songs on the Hill country list are:

At the Hop Danny and the Juniors
Eye of the Tiger Survivor
Free Bid Lynard Skinner
Going Up the Country Canned Heat
I'm So Excited Pointer Sisters
Let's Dance Benny Goodman
Love Train OJays
Rescue Me Fontella Bass
Runnin' Back to Saskatoon Guess Who...

That too. I remember well a difficult hill climb when Radar Love was in perfect synch with my effort, and the crescendo coincided with cresting the hill.

Hmmmm... I don't listen to a radio/MP3 or whathaveyou while riding, but I'll have a song in my head that helps me stay on cadence. Believe it or not, Disco has the right beat for my cadence. Think Earth Wind and Fire's 'Boogie Wonderland' or 'September.' AND it is 'happy music'....

I suppose it is better than .... ;)

Sometimes you just want/need to let nature soak in. But when music adds to it:

CCR - Born on the Bayou
Doors - Riders on the Storm

Yes to both.

I'll add: Stayin' Alive (the CPR tempo song).
Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy
