Cycle NC Day 6

Cycle NC Day 6. 60 miles from Greenville to New Bern. Flat flat flat roads! Wind was generally kind.

Rick, Doug and I had a great breakfast at the Scullery who opened early just for cyclists. We then road the 60 miles at a 20 mph average and got to the finish before they put up the finish arch.

Fabulous camp spot tonight. We are in the city park right next to the sound. I was able to find a nice shade tree where I should have shade most of the day.

Last night our sleep was interrupted by two different helicopters flying very low to the hospital. Then there were police sirens off and on. A few boats running up the Tar River right beside my tent. Then trash trucks emptying dumpsters throughout town. And finally a landscaper using a leaf blower to blow off parking lots starting at 4 am?!?!? I picked up a lot of the sounds even with my ear plugs!

Then I got a text after I’d gone to sleep about the possible breach of the sea wall by the water in the sound. So I couldn’t sleep wondering if I’d find myself floating in my tent later on that night????

I enjoyed walking around the historic old town which includes the Tryon Palace plus lots of older homes. Many of those are now B&B’s. My buddy and I enjoyed a great supper of clam chowder and shrimp and grits. Shrimp and grits are cooked a variety of ways across southern coastal towns. Some even use watermelon as flavoring!

New Bern is also where Pepsi was born!!https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ddb3e8b77.jpeg

Tryon Palace-dates back to the 1700’s.

Tomorrow is our final day. About 71 miles to Atlantic Beach. Headwinds could be a big challenge the last 20-30 miles as we ride NE up the coastline. The last forecast I saw was 15-20 mph.....

Cool! Great pictures. I’m younger by 15 years but still 50+ all of you keep me motivated and feeling great about taking in the sport of cycling.
