RideForEarl

There was a “semi-organized” ride today in honor of Earl Gillon who was hit and killed while riding two weeks ago. The organizer was one of the folks that worked in the local Trek bike shop where Earl did most of his cycling business. The ride was intended to be a simple low key group ride for 46 miles. There weren’t any sag stops or on course support. It wasn’t highly publicized and there wasn’t a ride fee. The idea was just to ride to honor our dear cycling friend.

Amazingly over 200 riders showed up! His family was also there for the start. Yet another example of how many people were touched by this extraordinary cyclist and extraordinary person.

We rode by his crash site and then out onto more rural roads. For the most part all 200 rode together.

I was able to talk and ride with a lot of 50+ folks I hadn’t seen in a number of years. Some of those haven’t been riding as much as they used to but wanted to be a part of today’s event.

I rode over and back from the house which added about 40 miles...........that’s what Earl would have done.

A link to a video of the riders passing his accident site. Some of the riders elected to ride a different road so this was not all of them.

A quick break about half way.

His cycling club before the start.

I imagine a big NASCAR crowd showed up to ride. They have a very large group of cyclists.

Great crowd and showing for a friend.

You’re probably right. I think Earl mentioned he showed Jr some roads to ride once. We rode around Jr’s property and the backside of DEI and Sr’s resting ace. Earl grew up in Kannapolis which was home to Sr of course. Jimmie is a really good cyclist. I ride with a fella who builds the car frames. Still a big business in the area.
