Approaching 83, just riding around having fun!

Used to do centuries, Ride the Rockies, track mileage - all that stuff. Now, approaching 81 and my wife approaching 83yo, we just ride for fun. My battery on my old Mtn bike computer died 2 years ago, I forgot how to set it on my road bike. So, we ride where we want (trails), I do some single track and steep hills on the mtn bike, and we simply enjoy ourselves, stopping and talking to people, taking pictures, whatever. I have no idea how many miles I ride, how fast or slow (definitely slow). I just know that I love to ride, and I love to walk (i do a lot of that), I love to swim - starting back today after adjusting for Covid, love to stretch and do resistance exercise, 2-3 inute planks, etc. So, are we a rarity? Anyone else?

A rarity? Considering most people don't get to be in their 80s, I'd say yes. I do know a few riders in their 80s, however.

I will be 82 this year. I have always just rode for fun and exercise, and still do. Depending on what usual route I ride, I ride from 20 to 35 miles every other day. I find that a recovery day off works well for me. I have been blessed with unusually good health all my life. I could easily pass for someone 15 years younger, and that is backed up by my doctor. About the only thing I have noticed about old age is the fact I dont have the stamina I used to. How ever I have given up almost nothing, it just takes a little longer. I for instance still do my own oil changes and tire rotations, plus other external maintence on my car. As I have posted before, if you set you rust.

There is an internet site I belong to---------------------- The Royal Academy of Octogenarian Cyclist. It is a sub group of Facebook.

Yes, I was at the Royal Academy Facebook site for a while but I did not jibe. Too much emphasis on racing and speed and distance. So I left.

BRAVO! Much better to be on a bike than behind the wheel of an auto at your age!

A friend I ride with is in his early 80's. Had a knee replacement and just this last season has stopped using the knee brace after surgery. He rides a fairly heavy Giant Escape hybrid. A few of us rode today for 20 miles, with one nasty grade and many lesser ones, he didn't walk any of them. I'm hoping to be able to ride the inclines he's still doing when I am his age (hope to do it without the knee replacement though).

3rd pic from the top I hope that is a wave and not an attempt at a selfie? Although why not? More power to you two!

Yes, we're exactly alike, except I'm 15 years younger, probably slower, afraid of single track, and I really hate doing exercises of any kind. But I love to ride, love to walk, and loved to swim. Let's check in again in a decade or so! Getting old is much more weird than I imagined.
