What Bicycling Rules do you follow that Experience has taught you?

Little kids will almost always do the exact opposite of what you expect; if you say on your left or passing to a little kid they will look over their left shoulder and move to the left, leading to the next rule, which is it's okay to get off your bike and walk around a kid or family on a trail. I've done that several times.

If a driver in a car waves you to go ahead. DON’T. Stare into space, examine your front tire whatever. This is simply a trap used by drivers to run you down and kill you.

Rule one is to ride a predictable manner. When there are parked cars along the road it is foolish to stick to the edge and pop out unexpectedly in front of motorists.
Rule two is to do whatever is safest in any given situation regardless of the "rules". I have been on many bike lanes where they had very dangerous sections and better to not rely on a bike lane for safe travel.

Trail riding:
When riding over frozen footprints, keep your mouth open and your tongue inside.
When you think you might lose control, don't stop pedalling.
When you approach a bunch of pedestrians, ring your bell and wait until they sort themselves out. Those on the left will cross to the right and those on the right will cross to the left.
