The perfect pre-ride breakfeast

This would be perfect. You guys remember these? They're all I ate in the morning in high school and I'd give anything if they made them again.

I don't, but I remember using the carnation instant breakfast w/ a banana & a small scoop of vanilla ice cream combined w/ a cpl bites of dinner. that was my formula between my work day & evening workout, for a while, in the early 80s

One of my favorites is regular oatmeal with a raw egg added at the start of the cooking, sitting right at the middle on top. In the serving bowl I add tbsp honey, handful of blueberries or whatever fruit, unsweetened almond milk. When the oatmeal is almost done, but still a bit wet. I break open the yolk and give it a stir, and it is ready to serve it in the bowl. I have an intolerance to regular dairy, and I actually do like the almond milk. Maybe I sure give oat milk a try.

Lots of breakfast bars out today but none come close to the old Carnation one.

I ate a lot of those bars as well.. great for eating on the school bus when running late!

I have had somewhat similar bars more recently, forget the names though.

Odd. Is there a photo accompanying the OP? I sometimes look at posts but don't see the images.

Dunno, guessing the "breakfast bar" was similar in nutrition value as Captain Crunch.

Most of my early morning rides are done fasted....If I do decide to have breakfast, I will have about 5 - 6 whole eggs cooked but with runny yolks, a large chunk of bread and a chocolate chip muffin. I usually wait about 60 minutes for the breakfast to settle before heading out for a ride.

If it’s early and the ride will be longer than 30 miles I’ll have a peanut butter and honey sandwich and a banana.

How about Space Food Sticks, in the 60s? In my memory, they were the precursor to energy bars. Anyone remember anything like that earlier?

My mom bought some for my brothers and me, once, and nobody liked them. I don't like energy bars to this day. When PowerBars came out, I hated them, especially in cold weather. Clif Bars looked like dog poo mixed with sawdust. All the rest just seem like candy bars for adults. What's wrong with a bag of nuts and raisins?

I particularly recall the Carnation instant breakfast drinks. A glass of whole milk and the 'vanilla' ones were a staple early in the morning out the door.

Tang. As succinctly put above, the space drink. Much like many kids my age the angle that astronauts drank it made it far more magical than the product ever was.
Pretty awesome for cleaning stainless pans and griddles....

My typical breakfast, ride day or not:

grapefruit + other fruit such as golden delicious apple and banana
tofu
steel cut oats with wheat germ on top

Calsun 12-07-21 04:42 PM

Whole grain pancakes with maple syrup work best for my body. Too many additives that cause me IBS in the snack bars and most have whey animal protein which is something I avoid - might as well eat bacon.

I have been using a recipe for snack bars that consists of peanut butter and carob powder and honey and rice flour and this has been effective for use while riding over the past 50 years. Many thousands of similar recipes on the Web.

Yes.
My favorite pre-ride breakfast; two home made waffles topped with easy-over fried eggs and two slices of bacon. Coffee. Fresh squeezed orange juice. This will keep me going for 2 or 3 hours before I have to take in any more calories.

If I'm in too much of a hurry to make the waffles and squeeze the orange juice I'll fall back on oatmeal with peanut butter, sunflower seeds, walnut chunks, sliced banana, and almond milk. Coffee.

I never cared for candy bars or "breakfast" bars.
Brent

Mmmm space food sticks. A bit crumbly, chewy, and okay taste wise, but we believed the astronauts are them so they were the best. Along with Tang, a space age marketing success.

All I can think of prior to that, in terms of energy bars, is maybe rice crispy treats. I'll use those as fuel on long bike rides, but not for breakfast.

I like oatmeal with fruit and nuts and milk, followed by coffee and a pastry early en route.

Yep. We used to drink that often when I went to school in the 'burbs and had an early school bus pickup. Mom would buy the variety pack. Vanilla and Strawberry were my favorites as I do not really like the taste of chocolate.

I always thought the chocolate one to be too thick and strange. The strawberry one reminds me of the barium drink you had to take for a GI scan. Yuk!

Always awesome when an adult believes that advising other adults to keep fluids in their body is fresh news.
Even more awesome when the latter acts like it was the first time they heard such advise :thumb:

My wife makes our energy bars from a recipe I found on-line. All natural ingredients and delicious. So coffee and an energy bar. Then pack another bar for on the bike and a water bottle with electrolytes and a GU gel in case I start feeling bad and need a boost.

In high school I drank gallons of chocolate flavored Instant Breakfast. Looks like the chemicals didn’t kill me off yet.

Organic Aussie Bites always work for me. A nice mix of proteins, carbs and fats that sit right and give me fuel for the first two hours.
