It’s 106° today

Has anybody had their tires partially melt and slow them down? What gear did you use to overcome the increased rolling resistance? 😎
I’m staying indoors for a while.

Not the tires but sometimes the pavement gets soft and squishy.

Gonna try to ride tomorrow, supposed to top out at 105 degrees. Hopefully get done before it reaches that.

crazy - mid August and we didn’t even get into the 70’s today

high 60’s - overcast with light mist and drizzle at times - felt more like a late fall ride

Desert Ryder 08-19-24 08:06 PM

Yeah..still 105 at 7:05 pm here

lmao

crazy - I attribute it to this thread !

August is typically second hottest month of the year - but six rides in August to date and the high temp during those rides was 74 degrees … crazy

but forecast high temps could be in high 80’s possibly 90 in a week or so

I suspect that a specifically-designed tougher rubber and materials for summer/hotter use would be the best solution. Much like automotive tires have a "summer" and "winter" compound, then the "all-season" in between (a compromise between those two, not as good as either in the extremes).

Can't recall having seen bike tire makers specifying whether they've got a hot-weather summer compound in their tires (tougher, harder), though some of them do so with their winter type tires. Probably the only way to be ceertain would be to contact them and speak with a knowledgable person at the companies themselves.

I've had shoes separate standing on pavement in 110ºF+ temps. Solution was, better-built, better compounds less reliance on "average" glues. I've had car tires lose much of their grip when they have overheated (worse in summer, as bad or worse on a track). Can't imagine bike tires would be much different. A tougher, summer-oriented compound and construction ought to be better capable of withstanding such temps and use.

Short of that ... As a guess, I'm assuming a thicker, touring-oriented tire would likely be a better choice. But, again, that's a WAG. Probably not the sort of tire you'd be looking for, if speaking of your Roubaix bike.

As a long-time Las Vegas resident, I can guarantee you that your tires will not melt no matter how hot it gets here in town. I wouldn't consider riding during the hottest part of the day. It can be dangerous as one motorcyclist who rode in Death Valley recently learned. He died before reaching some place to cool down.
I was visiting a friend for several hours yesterday and made the mistake of closing up the car windows while parked in the sun. When it came to going home I found the steering wheel too hot to handle without using a pair of gloves. The steering wheel was covered with a t-shirt so it got hot just from the temperature inside the car. Any metal object left in the sun will become too hot to pick up and that includes your handlebars which would get very uncomfortable. This morning right around daybreak the weather service lists the temperature as 82 degrees with 24% humidity so it is a very comfortable time to ride. In another post someone thought that the tires would explode if they did not reduce the pressure when leaving the bike in a garage when it was well over 100 degrees. If they understood physics and knew the gas law that predicts change in pressure with change in temperature they would realize the garage would have to be on fire to make the tire pop. BTW, the change is 1/273 for each change in temperature (Celsius or 1.8 degrees F). Lots of interesting interpretations of science out there.

Yeah, it wasn’t a serious question. I was just whining about how how it is. 😎

Pacific Coast marine layer. It will get up to 85F today, but at least it gets cool at night.

Cooling off at night would be a huge relief. Our low is 80° or a little higher. Florida has it worse with higher humidity but they also have beaches.

That sounds great but your winters would kick my butt worse than this heat.

It actually hit 107 yesterday in the DFW area.
Good day to hit the gym for me after many days of riding.
The mornings are the best choice for reasonable temps and daylight

Since you're from sw pa you're probably familiar with the area.
I have 2 houses, one in Garrett county MD and one that backs up to sods boundary line at 4000'.
You gotta be ok with winter and hills

Basically it means never having to run the air conditioner. I just shut the windows and pull the curtains during the day in rooms that would otherwise heat up, and then run a window fan at night.

Thanks to the low humidity, it isn't so bad unless you are in the direct sun.

Central ac is survival now. It’s funny that I grew up without ac until I was 20. Somehow I survived, but I wasn’t riding in the heat.
I did spend 20 years on a city street dept. in this weather in bluejeans and boots and played softball until I was 51. It didn’t bother me other than sweating heavy.
Now the heat gets to me but I think some of that may be from some meds. I am working on losing weight so I can get off of them.
