Ride On

It's actually a 28 on the front with a 25 out back. I rode 23s on everything for 30+ years.

This thing shows up every 3 or 4 months or so on my news feed, and I really don't set a lot by it.

Sure, a +65 year old pulling better than 20 mile rides sounds impressive on the surface, but there's no data showing how these rides are accomplished.

A ride day for me that's over 20 miles includes coffee breaks and rest stops, stops for taking pictures, etc etc.
I think a better barometer of the differences between age groups should center around time spent on the bike.
To me it really doesn't matter.
The important data to me personally is speed average, and total daily distances.

My daily rides for staying in riding shape are either 8 miles or 13 miles.
On days that I have time for longer rides I stop, shop, eat lunch whatever I'm not racing the clock.
My goal is at least 20 hours a month averaging 10 mph or more.

That's an attainable goal. :D
One of the things that has been having an increasing impact on the rides lately is the wind. Plays heck with the old speed averages, but at least I'm still riding, even if the distances are a bit shorter. Some wind days have the speed average dropping below 8 mph. Definitely gear down time, but I'm still as stubborn as a mule with downshifting.

I never did figure out how to read the article. Guess I've aged out. BS link anyway. Or maybe I shouldn't be using a Microsoft browser.

Hard to find an interesting metric. Miles per ride isn't interesting. Once a week? Miles per week suffers the same fate because many of us don't ride much in winter. Miles per year? That's maybe more like it. Of course, all this only includes riders who upload every frigging ride. I used to do that. But what about indoor rides? They don't count? I've always spent a heckuva lot of time on my resistance rollers, everything from recovery to Z5 intervals. Saves a lot of time on bike maintenance during our PNW winters, plus sometimes it's icy. Never uploaded any of them, except to TrainingPeaks, which AFAIK doesn't have a way to see past years' bike mileages. That said, back when I was uploading every outdoor ride, I didn't keep track of roller miles, so usually 5000 road miles and who knows how many more on the rollers. I really started cutting the mileage back when I turned 70, just not as strong anymore. Last time I rode my age was 77, though elevation gain only 800'. But who know what the future may hold?

Exactly, at 74 with osteoarthritis everywhere I can do 2 hours and 20+ miles just about every other day and am lucky to be in AZ in the winter and up in the mountains of WY in the summer months . Lots of modifications in frame size, bars, saddles, etc.
