New England cold.

Today I will wear leggings over my bib shorts, long gloves, shoe covers, and a ski vest over my winter riding jacket with a long sleeved shirt underneath. I will pull my headband down over my ears under my helmet. I am going to try to get 30 miles in today. The wind is not too bad today and it is from a favorable direction. The temperature wil top out in the mid fifities. My average speed is unimportant. It seems to take forever for spring to warm up here. At 79 I like to get out as soon as the snow is gone. I have seen one group out there this year but they were going in the opposite direction. I avoid the groups now because you never know what to expect. Happy riding and peddle in circles not squares.

Today, in south coastal Delaware, I got my ride in early, 20 miles. It was 52° with 12 to 15 mph wind coming off the ocean. In Bethany Beach, it was 48 with the wind at 15-18 mph.
I wore knee warmers and long socks with lined mtb shorts, thin long sleeve tee and jersey, along with a thinly insulated, wind block jacket.
I rode early due to the Bethany Beach to Bay bicycle ride. It covers a portion of where I ride, including the road my home is on. The bike and vehicular traffic can be quite heavy, impatience becomes a hazard.
Many of the riders looked to be struggling with the wind as they are heading due east into the headwind.
I have seen quite a few e-bikes, definitely a higher percentage this year, maybe I notice them more. I think it is likely some riders on traditional leg powered bikes took a short route, or did not ride. Not that many cyclists going by my house.

Yes, this was why I commented on the post about a Massachuset Micro tour. I would not have thought it would be much out of the 30’s the week they rode, but they seemed to have been OK. It’s 45 and raining today, so still cold in southern NE.

I feel your pain, lifelong MA resident. While I love the area for all it affords, weather is always an issue. I’ll ride in the low 40’s and have ridden even colder but the dreaded black ice becomes an issue for me when we fall into the 30’s falling becomes the fear. Wind is always stirring here as well, so temps may be 50 but with a steady 15-20 mph wind the feel and workout is different. Well, sorry for the rant, blessed to be riding regularly at 74. Enjoy the day, all.

I bought this cheap Walmart ski vest years ago and I wear it over my jacket. It keeps the core warm when that wind is blowing. I have always worn a head band under my helmet and when I pull it down over ears they stay warm. You learn these things.

Like you I’ve accumulated some cold weather gear. One I really like when I ride during winter are bar mitts. Really help keep the hands warm.

It's been a long, cold, wet post winter here in Northern NY. Temps vary from the high 30's to mid 50's this past week but windy 9-22mph generally NNE.
While I have all the clothing I need I don't ride in the 40's or lower. It just isn't fun and with the wind it can be brutal.

I have similar issues. I’m down in coastal Rhode Island. It generally stays a a few degrees cooler by the coast than just a few miles inland due to our proximity to the still cold seawater. Now retired, we’ve spent the past several winters (Jan to mid-April) in south Florida. I ride a lot down there in shorts and short sleeves all winter. When I get back to RI, although I have good clothing for riding all winter that hasn’t been getting used since we’ve been going south…I do still have to resort to the stuff I wear for fall/spring riding. But I’m loosing my acclimation to the cold. I get out there, dressed for what I feel will be a chilly ride, and pass others wearing shorts. — Dan

Looks like an interesting idea. I had the same for riding my motorcycle in cold/winter type conditions. At motorcycle speeds the hands really go cold quickly, even with insulated Moto gloves...
I have to ask - It looks very 'snug' around the Brake/shifter levers - how well does that work? I would think more room might be needed to operate them properly ?

Ride On
Yuri

EDIT: I just went to their site, and they do seem to have designs for 'brifters' with external cables and also newer cable thru bar designs...
I don;t particularly need them for cycling out here - but good to know they exist .

You know how you can tell it's cold? When you go out on 40 mile ride on the roads and don't see one other bike. Does that mean you are tougher than average or just crazy?

Not here. You'll see other bikes out in every kind of weather.

Well, I guess not necessarily in torrential storms, though it's possible if people get caught out in the middle of their ride.
. But definitely at any temperature.

We;ve had a crazy spring here - Last Sunday it snowed, Last Wednesday it was 87°F. And it's been see-sawing between warm and quite cold for weeks. I go back and forth between summer and "3 season" kit over and over again.
