My dream is to join one of the French Clubs that organise the "Etape" du Paris Roubaix. You have to be in a French Club to participate as Places are limited and French Club Riders get priority.
They don't do the whole ride- Just the about 100kms of the "Good" Bits

You can sign up with one of the tour groups approved by the organizers. This will guarantee you a spot. Went last year. My buddy rode. I had knee problems and watched from a sidewalk restaurant in Bedoin.
If it goes up Mount Ventoux take a Camelback. They always run out of water toward the end when the ride goes up that.

Some of the music really got on my nerves.
I didn't know the Eddy Merckx ever lost a race in his life.
Why wasn't he racing on a Merckx bike? And no carbon fibre, no helmets, and no STI. Primitive.

I looked up Eddy Merckx records on Wikipedia. The only race he won in 1976 was Milan San Remo, a one day race. He was born in 1945 so 1976 would make him 31 years old.
I noticed that most riders rode with no helmets. some had the padded leather strip helmets. Merckx wore nothing on his head.
160 miles itself is a feat. Wikipedia says 32.8 miles of total cobble sections with 28 sections.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum jerseys are still available.

The Paris Roubaix Etape is organised by the Flandres League of bike clubs in Northern France.
Hopefully link will work but this is an old Paris Roubaix Etape.

About 2/3rds down the list on the left is Paris Roubaix. Only a few pics and of this local club.Clubs get entries and to get an entry you belong to a Local club. Individuals can get places but only after the club Entries. And In France- The "Club" is everything.

Back in the 70's, pros didn't have to wear helmets in France. They had to wear the leather hairnets racing in Belgium, or on the track. The pros never wore helmets if they didn't have to.
I think Merckx's bikes were built that year by Ugo de Rosa.
Wow, wool jersies and shorts, with so little advertising. Those were the days... Except that doping was very prevalent; it was just an integral part of the culture.
Loved the sound of the various klaxons on all the following cars. The Jorgen Leth films were truly remarkable.

And 6 years after I was a racer! (Schoolkids, UK national, road/tt/cyclocross)
I'm certain I was equally cool, and not at all a gawky chicken legged Campygeek. And if you have evidence to the contrary, well, the camera CAN lie.
