Yes 50 is creeping up on me.. by mail. Does Nashbar have an AARP discount?

BTW when I turn 50 will I suddenly want to wear black support socks and ride a recumbent?

Welcome to the club, well almost. AARP sure is active in recruiting new dues paying members. Heck of a lobby. Perhaps I will join when I am on a walker. Don't worry about the bent yet, all in good time... Bob

None of that will happen, but the grey hair(s) is almost obligatory, and a spare tyre becomes the norm.

Wait until you get the "pre-planned" funeral fliers.

Have you bought your burial plot yet?

Then you start reading the obituaries and find guys my age and younger dropping off regularly.

And TV and rock stars of the 50's - 60's are meeting their maker. Lots of them, lately.

Not only will you be wearing black support socks but they will be held in place by garters that will have to match the suspenders that hold up your biking shorts.

I hate to break it to you, but getting AARP mailings is the first sure sign of old age.

Actually, they say there are three sure signs of old age. One is loss of memory, and I forget what the other two are.....

I love this thread. 50Plussers:

1. Wait till their children start saying, "Careful, Dad, let me get that for you".

2. Get coupons in the mail for incontinence pads

3. Walk to the other end of the house and can't recall why they're there.....and then wonder if this isn't the first forerunner of Alzheimer's.

4. Think of clever ways in conversation to describe someone they're referring to because they can't remember the person's name, as in--"I saw old, uh [thinking as rapidly as graying graymatter will allow] old "Mr. Litespeed" yesterday." [Damn, what's his name, guy rides a Litespeed at least I remember that]

5. Don't play catch in the street with the neighborhood kids because a) They've all grown up, or b) The ball passes too quickly through 50Plus trifocal lenses to focus on it

Etc. etc...........wish I could remember more of these to post! Maybe after my nap.

You too? I thought I was the only one, err . . . what was your name again - the guy on that nice (can't remember the brand) bike?

How about grunting when you get up from your recliner, or lean over to pick something up?

ah, to be 50 again!

my lifelong friend of over 50 years, who happens to be a year older than me - i'll be 60 in july, came by the other night to pick me up for a "boys night out" dinner together. he was driving his corvette. i can vaguely recall a time when i thought fondly of these cars - no more!

upon arriving at the restaurant, attempting to exit the vehicle, i realized that my friend had apparently unwittingly enabled the gravitational restraint system on the car. i expended a week's worth of energy before i was finally able to overcome the invisible force that held me captive inside of that infernal machine.

DG - i'll see your bathtub and raise you a corvette!

harrumph - to be 50 again!

Think about that burial plot and a pre-planned & pre-paid funeral. You simply must not stick the family with this final expense. It wouldn't do!

"Wasn't Dad supposed to have arranged for his burial plot and funeral?"

"No, he didn't.....bought that damned LiteSpeed Record bike instead...think its worth anything?"

Bad-taste joking aside, I recall how much easier it was because my parents had a Living Will, funeral plot, etc. A last, gracious parental gesture.

I joined so I could get their car insurance through Hartford. Even with the dues its the best deal I could find. By the way, when you start wearing those giant square sunglasses you are getting dangerously close to the end.

They really do!

And, I am not against it (my mom, 93, has hers all planned and paid for), but it does come as a shock.

And, you get all sorts of estate planning stuff from a variety of sources.

Yes, we do have a "special needs trust" and legal guardians and successor guardians for my son with a disability, and wills and durable powers of attorney and, most importantly, a durable medical power of attorney (much better than a "living will"). Everyone should have these, no matter their age.

But, I didn't choose my attorney from the bulk mail I received!

I'm well under 50, and I want a recumbent. Besides being comfortable, they're WAY cooler-looking than regular bikes, IMHO.

Dfox, you're brave. I never read the obituaries. I'm afraid one day I'll read one that starts with "Roccobike, used to post on Bike Forums".

when I was in Quebec on tour last year I had lost my sunglasses on the bus from NY. I was riding along the highway when I saw a pair of those huge square sunglasses on the side of the road. I wore them the next 7 days of the tour and they were great! It was like wearing a full face shield! Kept the bugs off , the wind out. and not one woman tried to pick me up!
