Bar Bag.............

I am looking for a handlebar bag and want to know if anyone here has a
favorite, or if anyone has even tried to use one. I would like to carry my
wallet, phone, glasses, keys, and a snack or two. Currently I use a
'Bentos'(sp) box' bag but it is a tad small and am looking for another
solution.

A search of the forums yielded nothing and only one lbs had a bag and it
was rather big.

I love these bags. Real quality, a decent price, quick snap-off/on, 3 sizes, an accessory light/computer bar and rain cover. The best price is usually at Nashbar. Between my wife and me, we have three of them. They also work well with brifters.

Rivendell offers a variety of somewhat pricey but unique (maybe pretentiously olde fashioned) bags....check 'em out here:

I use their banana bag and find it extremely stuffable and so anti-stylish as to be cool.

I use this Topeak bag: http://www.topeak.com/2006/products/...urguidehbb.php

It's great, not to big and not to small. It comes off easy so you can take it with you. You can buy additional mounts to use it on more than one bike.

Here is a list of 52 handlebar bags.

I know we are all different and I ride bikes offroad so it is probably a different sort of riding to what most do in any case. I would never fit a bar bag to any of my bikes-several reasons but the main one is that it affects the handling of the bike. I have tried allsorts of bags- and have settled out on a top bag fitted to a seat post mounted pannier. In fact- I have a couple of sizes for different uses but this does not affect the handling of the bike in any way. Admittedly it is not as convenient to get things out of this bag- but for safety sake- I think I would be stopping the bike to get anything out of a front mounted bag in any case.

I have 2 of these Nashbar bags. I find them to be just right for the little
stuff you need to carry for short rides without being to big.

One nice feature is that they will fit any bike made easily. :D

Doesn't that get a little uncomfortable when you're, you know, making whoopie?? :D

GG this link seems to take me right back to this thread. You sure this is right?

Bar Bag.................

Thanks guys for all the input. I had no idea there were so many choices
to pick from.

Stepfam,
Putting a bag up front might be a bad idea but I'm afraid of losing something
and feel that is less likely if it is in front of me. Besides, the most weight I
would put up there is a third water bottle.

Lion Steve,
You might have shown me a new shopping place. Thanks.

Digital Gee,
You have waaaaay too much free time on your hands.

Tightwad,
The small one looks to be the size I'm after. Oops. The Nashbar site....not
your url....shows a slightly smaller version of the one you pointed me
to. Sorry for the confusing reply.

All of my bikes have one of these hanging on the handlebars.....they are great, have surprising capacity, and hang out of the way when empty.

REI sells one that has a clear cover. You can put a map or route sheet in it.

I find the Baggins Candy Bar Bag from Rivendell to be perfect for carrying my wallet, keys, camera, bandana etc... Perfect compliment to the Banana Bag on back. I'm not too crazy about the new color, though.

Bell bag from Wally World. It isn't fancy, but it does the trick.

I like my cylindrical nylon Bellwether, but it is no longer made. Note also my aluminum support bracket, which merely loops around the bars and stem for quick attachment and removal.

Gentlemen
I'm sorry, I hate to bring this up, but everytime I see that this thread has climbed back to the top, I cringe. The title "Bar Bag..." strikes very close to home. It reminds me too much of my ex-wife.

Please in the future when choosing titles for threads, please consider the feelings and sensibilities of us gentler, more sensitive members. :D

Thank you
John in Oregon

If that's all, why not wear a small, unobtrusive fanny pack? Then you won't be forgetting your essentials out at your bike when you're rushing to make an emergency pit stop.

This beverage holder will work on the top bar of some bikes -- and maybe the handlebar of some uncluttered bikes (I'm using it for the trail-a-bike).

Funny this thread shows up today as I installed my new handlebar bag last night. It's Nashbar's branded bag, which is cheap and looks pretty good. I've got it mounted on my hybrid, so I'm not sure how it would look on road handlebars yet but I definately like it so far.

Check it out here.

I really like my Carradice bar bag. The quick release mounting is really firm and you can easily take your valuable when you leave the bike. Shoulder strap makes carrying the bag easy. The bag acts as a map holder which speeds up navigation.

If you use STI levers, avoid wide bags.
Large bags encourage heavy loads which may not be suitable for your steering. I find that a few lbs of weight on the front does no harm.

+1 on this advice - unless your fork has a rack to support the bag, having lots of weight hanging on the handlebars is a sure-fire handling nightmare (I speak from experience on this one). I've gotten to the point where I prefer not to even have a bag on the bars at all! The added wind resistance of the bag itself makes the fork turn more easily in cross winds when I've no hands on the bars (about 50% of my ride). Maybe my experience is unusual?

capejohn 05-18-06 12:19 PM

I got one at Kmart for around 5 or 6 bucks. It's a Bell and is good enough for the things you mentioned.
