Hip Replacement
 

Wondering if anyone has had THP and how they made out as far as riding again. I had been on a trike for a couple of years and the last 2 not able to even do that.
Had the THP June 6th and so far all I can say is WOW!

I never warmed up to the recumbent trike and would like to get back on an upright again.

I've been looking and see some really nice possibles, one being the Breezer Liberty.

I just wonder about sitting on a saddle again and that hip kind of hanging off.

One point to discuss with your ortho doc is falling while on a
2 wheel bike. Understand clearly what can happen to the hip
should you fall on it while riding.

The reason I say this is my orto doc told me that he'd much prefer
me to ride a trike (he's a cyclist too) than take any risk damaging
or loosening my Knees (he replaced both in 2004). He also advises
his hip patients to ride trike also.

So be clear of your risk factor before you hop back on 2 wheels, mate.

I am now 2 years, 4 months post left total hip arthroplasty, ceramic/ceramic. Have been back on the bike since 13 weeks post op. Initially, started on a wind trainer at 5 weeks. Still have some pulling/burning sensation in the L buttock, but notice no other problems riding, except age-related slowing(age 70). Live in north central AZ mountains so most of my rides are hilly. Use a compact double(48/34) crank on my road bike with a 12-27 cassette.

My THA resulted from a mtn. bike crash and resulting impacted hip fracture 9 years earlier, so I had a 1 cm. leg length discrepancy which has been corrected. Thus, I can actually ride better than I could preop. I notice no saddle-related problems. I primarily ride a custom Rivendell which allows me to get my handlebars slightly above the saddle level. I find this provides a more comfortable body position, although I am not on any 90 degree hip flexion restrictions.

I did not have the minimally invasive surgery. I have thought and worried about falling too. I have discussed cycling with my Doc and said it was OK.

Another option I have been thinking about more and more is a LWB recumbent, a Tour Easy or Rans Stratus. You can get both feet on the ground quite quickly they way they look.
Draw back I see is turning radius till one gets out of town.

I say the trike would be too low to get on but at this point I haven't tried. I'm still in the don't want to dislocate the new hip stage.
Everything so far gets better every day. I'm faithful to the PT exercises and walking with hardly a limp now.
I had different length legs too, forget how much but that is gone too now.

I go back for a recheck mid August. I'll talk in more detail with the doctor. I thought about bringing some pictures of different bikes to see what he says.

Why not consider a Worksman PAV or Litespeed trike??
Both are chair height and easy to ride.

Both are about Floyd Landis' pending hip replacement. Thought that you might
find these interesting.

My hip was trashed in an accident 27 years ago. Since then, 2 hip replacements after being pinned together for a number of years. I was hangin with some younger studs in a 19-21 mph paceline yesterday. Hip replacement(s)? No problem.
