My Saturday climb in graphic detail
Dang, I seemed to have lost my "I did it!" post in the DB crash & recovery.
Oh well... here -I hope- is a topo map of the climb. It looks worse "on paper" but I see why I had to stop now and again to start breathing again. I hope you enjoy topos as much as I do... Oh, it's the long, windy road labeled "Sharp Park" It really give you a nice idea of Pacifica's topography in general.
Can't seem to get it to display as an image. Sorry.

I didn't have any luck opening. Frontpage wanted to open it and all I get are a bunch of strange symbols, even when opening as html. Neither txt nor rtf (my other two choices) would open it either!
This is what I get:

Frontpage? What is that trying to do, I wonder? I use Firefox and it just opens up in a new browser window. I'll see what other options I have
edit: Oops! Never mind. Thank you, sir, for doing that

I pulled up the area in GoogleEarth, and it looks like the road starts at about 180 feet elev and goes up to about 720 at the summit, which is a bit off the map to the right. While I've done bigger, it wasn't anywhere near where I live! I'd consider that a pretty respectable climb.

180 feet? Much lower actually. The lowest point is 4' but that's just leading up to the climb. 25' looks like the beginning of the real fun. The road itself tops out at around 650'. So, 25-650 or 180-720, it's all about the same. It's a tough ride for this old asthmatic... tough, but doable.

So far, I've attempted it twice. If you look under the "A" in "Sharp" you can see a small road -such as it is- branching off the main road. Last Wednesday, I made it that far then turned around and went back down. Got up to 33mph. Fun ride down, that's for sure! Saturday I made it all the way to Skyline, which doesn't show on this map. Due to quirky boundary lines, I rode through 4 cities: Pacifica, San Bruno, Pacifica, South San Francisco, Pacifica, Daly City and back to Pacifica... all by riding in a straight line!
As I rode down Skyline and came up to the Pacifica City Limits sign... ohhh the smile on my face. You can't pay for that feeling, it must be earned.
When I was 12, I tried riding my 3 speed up Sharp Park Road.. Gave up.
This was the first time I've tried it since then.

How long is the climb? I don't think I can tell from the map. Just trying to get a feel for the percent grade.

I think that works out to be about a 6% average over two miles. Quodo's on a good climb.

6%, eh? Not too bad. In the interest of total disclosure, though, I did not ride up non-stop.
That's OK, non-stop wasn't the point but I do have to be honest. Don't want to misrepresent

SKT, why don't you try g-map pedometer, good for making cycling maps, also makes an elevation chart
https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
If you ever want to take some rides in the East Bay, shoot me a P.M. I was in your position 18 months ago of starting up after 20 years of non-riding, glad I did, and I enjoy riding with others and with groups as well as solo

Oh man... that's a fantastic tool. I cannot thank you enough for that link. Hm... only burned 321.25 calories , eh? And yes, much as I hate the bridge I'd be more than happy to shoot you a PM somewhere along the line. I imagine after a while, riding alone kinda sucks.

If you would like to see some other nice ride profiles try www.srcc.com and click on the Elevations line in the sidebar. My favorite is Pine Flat. It takes me 2-3 hours to do it and it takes local rider Levi Leipheimer something under 50 minutes.

Dudes.... Just map your rides out on mapitpronto to see the elevation.
Like this: www.mapitpronto.com
Just turn on the elevation graph at the bottom of the page.
I think it has a cleaner interface than gmaps-pedometer plus it supports importing routes from garmin gps units.
