I tried to get comfortable on the B-17 and the Pro, and neither worked for me. I used a Terry Fly for a couple of years, and it was ok, but became too soft. I have been riding on a Koobi Silver for several years now, and I really like it. Do yourself a favor and keep an open mind about saddles, try several and use what feels best for you.

George - Weren't you the guy that beat his Brooks with a mallet?
|
I've got an older model Terry Liberator Sport on my mtn.bike. WIsh they still made it-longer, narrower nose than the std.Lib, but the rear "platform" is still wide enough to be comfortable. The closest current model looks like it might be the Liberator Ti Race, or maybe the new Falcon model. Lots of hours on the old Lib.Sport, no discomfort.

rodriqai, the Brooks was not BEAT with a mallet, it was pushed in where the sit bone are suppose to be, and what does that have to do with a Terry saddle? Long winter huh.

You ask a lot of opinions about saddles. Being as you are the only one that knows how your bottom feels, perhaps you may be getting the ultimate feedback from yourself. |

Here is the start of your thread: "I've been trying to break in a Brooks B17 for 850 miles and it's killing me". I was just wondering if it was the same Brooks that's all. For what it's worth, I owned a Terry Fly "buzz off" saddle for a while and went back to my Brooks Pro. I wanted to try the cutout design. It was a lousy fit for me. Anybody want it? You can have it for the cost of shipping. Yeah, and it is a long winter. |
I put in nearly 1000 miles trying to get used to a Specialized Avatar....still hate the damn thing. I have over 1000 miles on the stock Bianchi saddle that came with the Giro and it is unbelievably comfortable to me. Go figure. It's sort of like Giro and Bell helmets..I desperately wanted the Giro Atmos to fit and be comfortable but it was the Bell Sweep R that felt the best. If it won't work...you can't force it.

Hate to hijack this thread, but the Terry Fly saddle I offered for shipping cost is gone.

I've ridden the Terry Liberator for several years and found it to be a very confortable saddle.

I have Brooks saddles on most of my bikes but a few years ago, I picked up a Koski leather covered saddle at a swap meet. Been using it on my Winter rain bikes for commuting & find it very comfortable, just found another one at my local club's swap meet, looks just the same as the 1st one but it is red & black. Keep your eyes open & grab one if you find it, they are very comfortable. They wear well & so far I spent $6 + $5 for 2 comfortable saddles. Not a bad investment compared to most. Also, I have a Terry WSD bike that my grand daughters ride with a Terry liberator saddle, I have ridden it a bit after doing adjustments & can verify it is a comfortable saddle, although a bit to "spongy" feeling. George,
This 1973 Brooks B-17 is on eBay right now. Looks like it is broken-in. |
Hey Tom, I've seen some worse than that, and wonder how people can like them so much, but then comes the comfort aspect. I'm going to give mine a few more weeks and see what happens. I too think that the Terry may be to soft.

Oh, and I had THEE worst case of sore ars in the sit bone region after a week long tour last summer with my longtime Terry. Differences....higher speed and cadence. And yes they have a bit too much padding for me. Good luck George! |

Hence, I've also found the padding on the Terry to be a bit too much. My sit bones tend to sink down into the saddle. This is quite nice for about an hour, but after that, it get's uncomfortable. The longer the ride, the more the discomfort grows.

Terry Fly is good for me up to double centuries. Haven't tried it yet on anything longer. It's narrower and has less padding than a Liberator. They do get softer after 10-15k miles, though. OTOH, there are many consumables with biking: tires, tubes, shorts to name a few. Don't like the Terry Dragonfly. Too flat for me.
