Would it be TOO Fred ......

if I put mtb platform pedals on my road bike. I tried clipless, and while I will concede that they are much more efficient and all, they just aren't for me. I like platforms, and ones with pins which grip the bottom of your shoes. I have seen some mtb platforms that don't look overly "clunky" that I think would not look too bad on the Reno. They are available in silver or black-the bike is basically silver with a little black. Crank arms are silver. What color platforms do you think would be best - or are mtb platforms a little TOO Fred?

As someone with $6 plastic pedals on my semi-high end mountain bike, I feel qualified to say, "Do watcha want. Those who matter don't care and those who care don't matter."

If you are riding for your own pleasure and enjoyment, I think you should ride what you want to. What difference does it matter what someone else thinks. 99.9% of the other people in this country aren't going to get off their lazy butts to walk across the living room to change the channel.

+1

Pick what you like and don't worry what other people think.

I wouldn't do it but that bike has to please only one person in the whole world and I'm not the one. If you think platform pedals will make you happy, go for it.

I agree. Go with what works for you. Who cares what anyone else thinks? Besides your feet will be moving so fast no one will know what kind of pedals you are using anyway.

While biking? That would be really tight.

Whatever you do, it's important to be yourself. If you were someone else, then there would be two of them and none of you. And if you can't please everyone, make sure you please me, because I am usually the final arbitor of all things fashion and style related. I write snarky columns for bike magazines, don't ya know.

Who cares if they are Fred? You tried clipless and didn't like them, so by all means, go with what you like.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the line about pins that grip the shoes. Are you talking about the serrations around the edge of the pedals?

You may find that one of the road pedal designs from MKS would be what you are looking for. They are good quality (made in Japan), reasonably priced and they look good. Several models are shown on this page.

I still occasionally use the MKS Sylvan Track pedals that came on my '92 Bridgestone RB-1. They look and work like new.

These are nice pedals, I used some for about a year. Feet do not slip slide around.

Well, I for one can't believe you'd ride MTB platforms on a road bike. Geesh!

Last week you couldn't even spell Roubaix.

I know, it's already been said, but it was funny enough to bring up again.

That is awful, disgusting and just plain mean to the Roubaix.

At least get some $50+ platform pedals.

"Roobay?" Is that a lower-end version of Ebay?

Providing you ride the bike and never stop so that others can see the pedals- It does not matter what you fit.

You have a bike and you ride it. Doesn't matter what pedals you fit- providing they are comfortable for you. No Fredness about it- Common sense maybe but both Freds and the OCPer's lack that so you will alienate both camps if you are not carefull.

Road bike with platforms is not OCP

and

Platforms with a non fred bike.

My daughter's Giant road bike came with some alloy platform pedals and they actually look pretty nice. They have the type of grip surface you're talking about. There used to be nice "racey" looking alloy pedals that were very common, maybe you could find some of them if you want a little more sleek look. I might even have a pair in the "box of bike crap".

The other day, we took the cage/straps that came with my daughter's pedals off because she didn't like using them and doesn't want to spend money on trying clipless+shoes. I bought and put on some "Power Grips" (simple strap thing) for her to try and I think this will be a good option for someone who likes platform pedals, but would like some simple to use, safe attachment system. I see Nashbar has a platform pedal/power grip combo deal. Worth a look-see.
