Fathers Day, Smoking, Newbie Biker

We have tried to get our son off smoking for some time. I like to share his letter for Fathers Day.
Perhaps it may inspire others. We hope and pray for his strength.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy Father's Day, dad.

Let me start by saying thank you for helping me quit smoking. I really doubt that I could have pulled it off without several bits that came from you. Let me start with the obvious.

The bike, for one. It showed me how poor my conditioning was. Seeing that I could not even maintain a cadence and ride at a reasonable pace woke me up. Seeing where you are in your level of conditioning and comparing it to myself closed the deal.

At least as important as the bike was our daily email conversations -- especially those we had prior to me quitting. Once I comitted to telling you that I would quit smoking during the weekend of 4/20, I knew that failure would not be an option -- see, I do have some pride.

Beyond all that are the intangibles. They are those things that were set by your example. If you would have been a fat, lazy, cranky old bastard instead of the striking image of vitality that you currently are, I do not think that I would have had the necessary visions to complete my mission. You showed me that there is light at the end of the aging tunnel. Not many people have that type of role model.

Thank you, and I love you.

Happy Father's Day,
Bernd

A great Father's Day message, Will. Not to mention a testimony to your own, personal fathering skills. Always good for us fathers to know our "job" is never done, we're never washed up as father till our last breath....and even then our lifetime of fathering seems to go on in our children. Thanks for posting.

(One more reason it makes all those miles worth it when you read that last paragraph.)

That's GREAT!! You have a lot to be proud of. And very happy your son quit smoking, just don't understand why people smoke, especially since there is so much more available info now on the harmful effects. I'm an ex-smoker, one of the best things I ever did was to quit.

Hey 50+ BF.
I am happy but hope this will last. Let us all do our best and that must be good enough. Providence knows that there is so little we can control.

A very touching and appropriate message from a son on Father's Day. You did your part to show him the right way and so "Happy Father's Day" to all.

That's way cool Will. My problem is that I AM a fat, lazy, cranky old bastard. Damn! But hey, guess what, I've got Lovey fooled, she just gave me a gift card for a 1 hour massage at a great local spa!

That is a lifelong keeper there.

I saw a local sign that says: A Good Father Makes a Good Son.

Your example and story just reinforces the message.

Hey all! I am the guy who quit smoking and tossed my pop the thankyou email. I really do not think I would be a non-smoker today had it not been for his role modeling. Ride on.

Nice when you can be proud of your Dad, isn't it? And you don't sound too bad yourself.

Ahh, finally we meet. Your dad, in previous posts, has been very concerned about you. A loving dad. And from your letter-- a loving son. Good wishes for your resolve and determination...and success. Keep on posting. Give it a few years and you two may well be XC'ing together. Leading out for Will next Father's Day would be one heck of a F.D.'s gift.

Wait one second here - what kind of pictures have you been sending your son? Cause I always thought you were a fat, lazy, cranky old bastard.

Regardless, fantastic email - good job.
