New Bars

Picked up a new set of bars from Performance and put them on Friday. ControlTech Formidable Alloy.

I was thinking about FSA-Kwing bars but it seems like every time I have crashed the bars take a hit, so paying for high priced carbon bars that may get damaged was ruled out. Went for a ride yesterday and I am very happy with the outcome. Having a flat top and some ergo depressions in front of the hoods made these very comfortable to ride with. They also only weigh 290g so they are pretty light, much better than the Richey Pro bars that came on the bike.

Love the classic-looking drops. The flat tops look intertesting. When you're ready, give us a ride report.

I like that flat top, if I get a road bike that's what it will have. I don't know what you call them, but I've seen bars where the drops are flared out so you can get in the drops without reaching around the top. I think, they really looked comfortable.

I have the FSA aluminum with the flat top surface and
find them very comfortable.

They appear to be extremely didficult to wrap.....how far onto the "flats" did you wrap???? How did you get the tape/wrap to stay tucked/stuck into the ergo depressions???

I have only done a couple of 20mi rides on them and they felt really good. I may get a long ride on the 4th.

Wrapping them was not difficult, I reused the Cinelli gel cork tape that was on the Ritchey bars. I thought that I would probably come up short but did not. I wrapped them right before the CT logo where there are a couple of rises in the shape, and by stretching the tape it stays tight to the bars even in the more complicated shapes.. I have had really good luck with the Cinelli tape so we will see how well the bars stay wrapped.

I follow the advanced technique on the park tool sight where you wrap the left drop counter clockwise and the right drop clockwise and then come around the top of the hoods and wrap both tops toward the seat. This does a good job of keeping the tape in place and natural hand movement tightens it rather than loosening it.

Here is a shot of them wrapped:

That might be On One's Midge. The drop is quite shallow, and the height is such that most of your riding will be in the drops. I was sorely tempted, but that's ($75.00) a lot of money for something I might not like.

Those are close, the ones I'm talking about ,curve just like the bars above, but where you rest your hands on the drops, is the only part that is flared out. Thanks anyhow, I sure appreciate it.

You might be thinking of these:

The lower end of the drops flares out a bit (about 1 cm).

That's the ones, but I wonder if they come in something other than carbon. Thanks a lot.
