Gone for a Week
Hey All,
Leaving for a week to visit my daughter in Dallas (and have Patriots/Cowboy tickets
). Might do some extensive looking around as I am looking for a warm, flat place to retire. I won't have internet access so any Accomplishments, etc. will not get my attention. If you really want something to get on the site you will have to send me a reminder with the thread link.
Did manage to get some done during lunch today.
Jet Travis's last place story and coloradopenguins century in Accomplishments and
Bluesdawgs ride with his son and TB lazy vacation in Special Times on a Bike.

Retirement location? Dallas???
Austin maybe. Fredericksburg is wonderful. Maybe along the coast near Corpus Christi if you can weather the occasional hurricane. But around Dallas? Not me. That is one of my least favorite cities. Way too hot in the summer, and frequently humid too. Way too crowded. It is a huge, neverending suburb. Metro population is nearly 5 million and growing fast.

Having lived outside Dallas as part of that neverending suburb more years than I want to think about, I'll have to agree that there are probably better places to retire. Austin is certainly a beautiful city and bicycle friendly if you don't count all the cyclists who have been killed by cars lately. Fredricsburg is a bit touristy but celebrates the German Texas culture with unabashed enthusiasm. The indigenous architecture there is a must see--limestone ranch, nothing else quite like it. I certainly hope to get away from the Metroplex when I retire (but then my heritage is Oklahoma Cherokee, and this place is full of cowboys or cowboy wannabees!! Think oil and water). Never-the-less, the DFW area has a more liveable climate, than say...Wisconsin
... for most of the year, and I can ride year round without putting studs on my tires. Most people go from their air conditioned house, to their air conditioned car, to their air conditioned office and barely expose themselves to the summer heat. For a cyclist, it is just imperative that you take hydration seriously and train yourselve for the conditions. Where in Dallas does your daughter live? If she lives near the northeast side of town, would you have time to get together for a ride Monday morning? My stable of bikes is all vintage steel, but I could probably find something that would approach comfortable for you. If you are interested, pm me and we'll figure out how to make it happen. I have a 58 mile birthday ride coming up next week and could use a good warmup.

Thanks for putting my ride up on the site. I have to agree with the others about Dallas. In all my business trips to Dallas I never saw anything I couldn't do without. And I'll never forgive the cowpokes for that 1980 playoff game against the Falcons.

Yep, I'm Back
I'm back and have 500 emails to catch up with 
Anyway, we had a great time. Stayed with my daughter up in Grapevine and although I didn't have any time to ride I did get some pictures of some MTBers out on the trail near Grapevine Lake. I'll post them later. We went to the Ft Worth Zoo (got some great pics) and Stockyards, and did some exploring of the towns farther north. I actually liked the area, but maybe that's because we never really went to Dallas. The game was alot of fun, especially since the Pats won.
I couldn't believe I walked into Starbucks and got two large coffees for $4.00. Here they are about $4.00 for one medium.
