Am I nuts? Get the shrink, quick!
I just came home with new underwear that cost $70. And that's just for ONE teeshirt, which is a Smartwool "Next to Skin" midweight crew, made of super fine merino wool.
SEVENTY DOLLARS!
I rarely pay that kind of money for almost any other garment, let alone a tee shirt.
But...although time was limited, it was getting dark, and about to rain, I couldn't resist putting on the shirt, together with my arm warmers, new leg warmers, bibs, new headband that covers ears too, and 50+ jersey for a test ride around the block a few times.
Whoa.
Double whoa.
Comfortable, warm, just a fantastic feeling. It was sublime. It was warm. It was wonderful. Again, just a few minutes in the saddle but now I know why people spend this kind of money for this kind of thing.
Oh, and I "joined" REI so I got some kind of discount, as well. It's all good.
Call the shrink. I want to find the Digital Gee who joined two years ago. He's gone missing!

I just got a silk long sleeve undershirt silk long johns. Very soft and reasonably warm. $30 before 20% off at SierraTradingCompany. Of course, merino wool is heavier duty and very nice. My wife's 100% merino tops were $30.
I usually buy the expensive stuff when I can get 50% off; SierraTrading usually starts at 50% off.
Enjoy DG!

Thank George W. for flushing the dollar down the toilet. I just paid $7.00 for a two pack of auto light bulbs for the high brake light.. Totally over the top. bk

Last thread I read from you was about "whining & worrying away 2007" or "riding away 2007". Guess that decision has been made - in style. Ride on - it's always a good alternative.

$70 for a high-tech tee shirt to wear in San Diego? Yeah, that is pretty weird considering that I wore a $12 "tech" tee shirt on my 27F degree 30 miler today.

I can now report that I will never take this shirt off again. Ever. It's the most comfortable piece of clothing I've ever worn. By the way, I tried on lots of tech shirts, even bought another one at a third the price because I liked it too. But this shirt is to die for. Or die in. It reminds me of the baseball uniform I got when I was ten years old in that I never wanted to take that off either. As you know, I went on to a career pitching for the Boston Red Sox before becoming a play-by-play announcer, all of which I attribute to that little uniform when I was a kid.
Wait...some of that above isn't true.
But this shirt is not coming off. I'm wearing it now with some snuggly sweats and feel all toasty. Only thing missing is a fireplace.
I probably should have waited for a sale. Sometimes, you can't wait. Too many times in my life I've found something that was just perfect, and I hesitated, waiting for a better time. I regret those hesitations. Occasionally, I pull the trigger against all logic, and it turns out well.
In cycling, that happened with the Roubaix, the bibs, and now, this shirt.
Ahhhhhhh...............

Whoa.
Double whoa.
Comfortable, warm, just a fantastic feeling. It was sublime. It was warm. It was wonderful. Again, just a few minutes in the saddle but now I know why people spend this kind of money for this kind of thing.

Sounds like it was money well spent.
Now maybe you can help me make the decision to buy those Lake winter cycling shoes I've been looking at all day

Yup, yer nutz.
But nothing's worse than not being comfortable on a cool- or cold-weather ride.
I need to give that same base layer a try.

"When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping." Words to live by. And if they eventually go on sale for a much lower price, you don't kick yourself--you just buy more! Personally, I'm a huge believer in retail therapy. Works every time. Don't you just love these emoticons?

It could have been worse. You could have spent the $70 bucks on the shrink, and then he would have bought the shirt.

Done! They should ship in 2 days
Now let's hope I feel about them the way you feel about your new shirt.

A few stray thoughts:
Twenty years from now you won't remember the $70. But, hopefully Gary, you'll remember and maybe even still own that shirt. Of course, you might not remember either, but at least you'll have had the experience of going first class when you did have a memory! $70 = a good dinner at a first class resturant or a wool undershirt. I'll take the shirt any day!

And here I sit with a $75 REI Gift Card in my wallet.
Odds are low that I blow the whole wad on an undershirt.

I have had a long sleeve Smartwool shirt for years. I save it for special occasions.
It's really comfy, and as time goes by that will be all you care about.
