Heat Wave heading to Midwest?

I checked the 10-day forecast and what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a heat wave heading to the Midwest this weekend. Current predictions (which could turn out to be nothing more than cruel broken promises) are:

Sunday - 48, Monday - 49, Tuesday - 47.

Sunday's low is predicted to be 40.

Wow!

To put this into perspective, the all-time recorded high for Jan 6th is 41. So a 48 would smash more than 100 years of history.

The downside is that it is supposed to be cloudy and rainy on every one of these days, and with the snow meltoff that is bound to occur, it will be a mess. Probably have some flooding.

Prediction for Columbus, OH is 59 on Monday and Tuesday.
" " Chicago suburbs is 52 on Sunday & Monday.

Alas for the poor souls in Minneapolis, you get 37 & 36 as highs.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

maddmaxx 01-02-08 12:42 PM

:eek:I'm looking forward to your weather getting here.....I've got electric heat...

Beverly 01-02-08 01:02 PM

I'm looking forward to this:D It's currently 14F with snow and 13MPH winds.

As our local weatherman says "If you don't like the weather - wait a couple hours and it will change":)

Tom Bombadil 01-02-08 01:12 PM

I'm hoping that it will melt all of the snow off of my rail trail, then it can freeze hard after that and make for a nice riding surface.

I'd also like to see the grass in my yard. Last time I saw it was around Nov 24th.

maddmaxx 01-02-08 01:53 PM

Beware of the limestone dust when the top quarter inch melts on your trail. It sticks like concrete and really does bad things to mechanicals. You must clean it off.

Tom Bombadil 01-02-08 02:08 PM

Been there, done that.

Ah, but my* forecast says 42 for Saturday, so we'll have to see. Remember when you were going to come to MN for some rail trail riding, and your program gave a different report than mine? I'm hoping for 42, that would be lovely!!!!!

Thanks for mentioning this... I had no idea the future looked so bright!

It's George Bush's fault!

Actually, in my AO, they're predicting 42F on Saturday and 56F on Sunday (I had to go back to the weather site to double-check that Sunday temp - I couldn't believe it after i typed it!).

Looks like about 50 and some sun here in central Illinois for Saturday ... it'll be the first time in 10 days that I'll be able to ride. WooooHoooo (with emphasis).

It may be a little sloppy, though, if the snow doesn't get cleared! Here's hoping!

That, my friend is what we call short-sleeved jersey weather up here!

:)

There certainly are going to be a lot of people in the Chicago area who will be thrilled to be getting three consecutive 50'ish days in early January.

And there is no cold weather in the 10-day forecast, even toward the end of the period it still expected to be 30-32. Very toasty for January in these parts.

Tom Bombadil 01-02-08 10:18 PM

Terrierman country is looking at the mid-60's. Time for a century ride.

maddmaxx 01-03-08 05:52 AM

OK......its 6degf. Where's the heat?

I see it coming in the forcasts, but its not here quite yet.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.....are we there yet.

Next landmark. How many days to the Daytona 500...the unofficial begining of spring.

solveg 01-03-08 06:32 AM

We got it. It's 18 degrees warmer this morning than yesterday.

About 44 days.......I'll be in Florida but on the other side of the state:)

crtreedude 01-03-08 07:52 AM

You poor brave souls - the ice is forming in your brains if you think 40 F is a heat wave...

bobkat 01-03-08 08:27 AM

Rub it in crtreedude! Ha! I envy you!
It blew like mad last night and this morning it's warmer already, though still below freezing. Looks like we get the heat wave even before those Minnesotans and Cheese Heads! Of course we'll pay for it later on when it gets cold again! I'll have to lower down the bike from the rafters today if my buddy doesn't talk me into going ice fishing!

Anything above freezing is appreciated this time of year:)

It's currently 10F and snowing:(

Time to get out in the field with my terriers. Major bike rides are for when it is too hot to hunt. And all bike rides are to be in decent enough shape to hunt (well, that and for the fun of it).

BlazingPedals 01-03-08 12:24 PM

I'll bet the warm temps this weekend are held as an example of Evil Global Warming, while the single digits we're getting now are quickly forgotten.

Dellphinus 01-03-08 07:03 PM

We're in the path of your heat wave. Temp yesterday morning was 11, with wind chill of -11. Today, it was 8, with wind chill of 8. Saturday, it's supposed to be 50 something, and Saturday, 60 something. Wanna guess what I'm going to be doing this weekend? Sat: taking down Christmas lights, and bike riding. Sun: just bike riding.

I hope...

Tom Bombadil 01-05-08 11:42 AM

Our forecasts have been tempered a bit. I suspected they would be, as the air mass cools when it gets over a large snow cover. The air temp might have gotten to around 50 if all of the Midwest hadn't been covered by snow. Now our prediction for Sunday is 43, which will still break an all-time high (recorded history).

It is 37 now and the snow is melting a bit.

I see the predictions for Indianapolis as still very warm - 61, 61, and 57 over the next three days. About the same for Springfield, IL. Perhaps I should drive down there.

Trsnrtr 01-05-08 12:59 PM

I got to ride yesterday (36F) and today (40s). It was a little wet from all of the melting snow and high humidity, but that's life in the Winter. :)

well, Sat was a bust, got the lights down, and spent the rest of the day getting new brakes on the van.

Sunday was glorious- rode along the Great River Road (Mississippi and Illinois rivers), in shorts and jersey, and worked up a sweat. A little breezy, but no too bad. An old road into the state park, been closed for years, was reopened, so I tried it. A mile long, about 500' climb, with a little dip in the middle. It was great, not too easy, not too hard, and looked like Skyline drive (Shenandoah NP). A new favorite for the MS150 training. Shirt sleeve riding in Jan in the midwest- whodathunkit.

Tom Bombadil 01-07-08 10:20 PM

We are now in our third day of pea-soup fog. Had to slow to 30 mph on my drive home, as I was having a hard time seeing the road. There was a 100+ car pile-up on I-90 outside of Madison.

Still the mid-40's have felt nice and warm.

Dellphinus 01-07-08 10:36 PM

ANd I just got back up- we're surrounded by severe thunderstorms, tornado warnings and heavy rain. in January. whodathunkit.

jibi 01-07-08 11:07 PM

The forecast for Melbourne, Australia over the next few days is in the 40's as well but 40 degrees C!!!!

I think I am going to fry for a couple of days.

New Year's Eve was spent at the beach as it was 27C at midnight.
