I'm officially juicing...
With some Christmas cash gifts, I've purchased a Jack LaLanne juicer. I figure if he's still going strong and recommends juicing, I am going to give it a try. I already have a VitaMix, but don't always want to drink pulpy drinks. This gives me the best of both worlds. I can drink clear juice, and freeze the pulp for smoothies with the VitaMix.
I'd love to hear your experiences with juicing (the fruit and vegetable kind, please) if you have them. Here's a picture of a typical day's consumption. I can't wait to start riding the Cypress to the market for fresh fruits and veggies and especially trying things I've never tasted before.

One thing I can never understand why juice the courgette, carrots and celery when they can be put in a casserole- or stir fry and enjoyed with a good Meat- and Saute potatoes. The fruit I can understand but The side dishes to a good steak- ????

One reason is time. Juicing is quick and easy. Not a substitute for other ways to prepare food, just a different way to enjoy them.

I hope you keep with it. Sounds good to me.
I'm still trying to remember to drink more store brand V-8 juice.

Frozen treats DG - it is the ticket. I don't snack on chips etc, but we have little bags of frozen fruit juices (homemade) in the freezer. I have to be careful, I can go through a bunch in a short period of time.

Squirrel
Dee Gee, Here's what you do. Juice a kiwi. Pour a tall glass 1/2 full of Fresca. Add Kiwi to glass and observe, amazed. Don't let it settle! As soon as it's done exploding, drink it, and you will have the greatest experience ever. You will want to make this whenever anyone comes over, so buy lots of kiwis.

The Jack LaLanne juicer is really quite good--better than most stuff sold on TV. I've got one, but have to admit haven't used it much lately. DG, you're inspiring me to dust it off.

I've done some real PEDs (all legally and properly prescribed) and man, I can tell you that EPO is absolutely great stuff. Keep your V8 and Jack Lalanne juicer. I'll take Aranesp any day.

I had a few shots of Aranesp when my red blood count crashed during chemo. One day when I was sick and tired of lying around in bed during treatments, I went out for a ride and did a whopping three miles. I came back home and laid down in my bed and panted for 45 minutes, trying to catch my breath. A few days later I got some Aranesp, and it felt like coming back from the dead. My red blood count quickly came back to normal, and I felt human again. The 5-FU and leucovorin I was getting did little for the cancer, but really kicked the living sh*t out of me. Aransep, which is one of the newer forms of EPO, is magic juice.
Seriously, DG is absolutely right about juicing his way, rather than the EPO way. When you need it, it's great. I absolutely, completely, and fully understand why bikers use EPO. Bumping up your red blood count makes a real difference.

I've been juicing for over two decades. My all time favorite (can't begin to imagine the gallons of this stuff I've had over the years) is apple and carrot juice with a small chunk of fresh ginger thrown in when the carrots are being juiced. (5 or 6 carrots, two apples, and small chunk 1/8th inch of ginger). I also like blueberry and apple juice (four apples & half pint of blueberries. This is a bit expensive depending on the price of blueberries). DG, one other thing to consider is organic fruits and vegetables. Many places put a thin layer of wax over produce with isn't really too good for most juicers, and you want to avoid anything with pesticides and fungicides on them. Since carrots and apples are staples when it comes to my juicing,, I tend to buy them in very large quanities... 10lb or larger bags of carrots and bushel baskets of apples. Which reminds me of another favorite juice, 50/50 split of granny smith apples (adds tart flavors) with pears (adds sweetness).

Less chance of dangerously high hematocrit leading to blood clots with juice than with EPO. Keep the juicer. Can you put ice cream in it? Beet/carrot/tomato/celery milkshake. Yummmmm

Don't fall into the trap my wife's dad followed with the juicer thing. He ended up buying every model of juicer ever made in search of one that worked. When we cleaned out the house there must have been 10 juicers.

I have had a juicer for awhile --the only problem I have and it keeps me from using it-
is it is a pain in the neck to clean
If I didn't work and have 3 kids I would probably find the time to use it more often

I read that a lot on the internet review sites as well. Frankly, I don't understand it. I timed it -- it takes me no more than two minutes to clean the unit and reassemble. Two minutes. Of course, it's important to clean it immediately because letting it sit means a tougher job cleaning. But a couple of minutes doesn't seem like to much hassle, at least to me.
